This position is responsible for the planning, direction, and supervision of all technical aspects of assigned department within the laboratory to ensure the safe and efficient performance of departmental operations. I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Supervises the work of laboratory personnel engaged in performing routine and specialized technical procedures, including planning laboratory work, evaluating work performed and handling procedural and technical laboratory problems.
2. Develops, implements, and monitors quality control programs to ensure reliability of testing procedures, proper function of laboratory equipment and compliance with federal regulations; prepare and maintain applicable records.
3. Designs appropriate work schedules for subordinate employees including student rotations and plans daily work assignments in order to maintain an adequate personnel complement for laboratory efficiency.
4. Interprets accrediting agencies standards or guidelines for laboratory testing program and translates requirement into policies and procedures; initiates corrective action as soon as deficiency is identified; completes checklist and other information sheets required and coordinates on-site inspection of sections for which responsible.
5. Maintains sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties; clean and maintain standard laboratory equipment within budgetary guidelines.
6. Provides advanced problem solving, troubleshooting, interpretation/consultation, verification of specimen quality and test results.
7. Resolves customer problems, complaints, and or criticisms. Documents problem solving efforts and significant customer / patient communications. Investigates and resolves department related safety events.
8. Encourages professional growth and development of personnel through continuing education programs and competency assessment.
9. Stays abreast of and execute latest technical and management developments including new lab procedures.
10. Demonstrates decision-making abilities in all aspects of performance.
Standard Supervisor Level Responsibilities:
1. Supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
2. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved.
3. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork, motivation and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives.
4. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
5. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc.
6. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations.
7. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements.
8. Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures.
9. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department.
10. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.
11. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements.
12. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field.
Preferred:
1. American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
Experience/Skill:
Required:
1. Minimum two (2) years of experience in moderate and high complexity testing.
2. Thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
3. Considerable knowledge of regulatory standards, safety, infection control practices, and the chemical hygiene plan.
4. Ability to lead, guide, and motivate others.
5. Ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English.
Preferred:
1. Minimum five (5) years of moderate and high complexity testing in a clinical laboratory of similar or larger size.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered Light Work. Position requires work indoors in a laboratory environment.
