What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Experience: Minimum of 2+ years in healthcare finance, patient registration, or medical billing/insurance verification.

  • Knowledge: Solid understanding of medical terminology, CPT/ICD-10 coding, and diverse insurance types (HMO, PPO, Medicare, Medicaid).

  • Communication: Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to discuss sensitive financial matters with dignity and tact.

  • Technical Proficiency: Comfort navigating Electronic Health Records (EHR) and financial software systems.

  • Education: High School Diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Language: bilingual skills (English/Portuguese or English/Spanish) are a significant plus in our Dartmouth community.

Responsibilities

The Role

As a Patient Financial Advocate, you serve as a personal guide for patients navigating insurance coverage, high deductibles, and financial assistance programs. You will work on-site to provide face-to-face support, ensuring every patient understands their financial obligations and the options available to them.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Counseling: Meet with patients and families to explain insurance benefits, out-of-pocket estimates, and payment responsibilities.

  • Assistance Navigation: Identify and help patients apply for federal, state, and local assistance programs (e.g., Medicaid) or internal charity care.

  • Insurance Verification: Confirm coverage, obtain necessary authorizations, and resolve potential billing hurdles before they impact the patient.

  • Proactive Solutions: Establish manageable payment plans and collect point-of-service payments with professionalism and empathy.

  • Collaborative Support: Work closely with Case Management, Social Work, and Billing departments to ensure a seamless patient experience.
