HVAC Technician
Job Description
This role focuses on maintaining, repairing, and improving plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, and related building equipment across campus facilities. The technician reviews and prioritizes work orders, responds to emergencies, performs preventative maintenance, and supports renovation and improvement projects while following all safety and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Review and prioritize all maintenance assignments, responding immediately to emergency and urgent calls.
- Accurately read, interpret, and follow plans, layouts, and written instructions for maintenance and repair work.
- Conduct regular walk-throughs of work areas to identify preventative maintenance and repair needs.
- Clean, maintain, and repair boilers, furnaces, air handlers, and other plumbing controls and fixtures.
- Perform inspections and preventative maintenance on plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Carry out regular and routine maintenance and repair on HVAC and plumbing systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Maintain and service swimming pool systems as assigned.
- Assist with the design of new or modified plumbing and heating systems, providing practical input based on field experience.
- Promptly respond to facilities emergencies while following all safety guidelines and protocols.
- Adhere to material safety data guidelines and follow lockout/tagout procedures when working on equipment.
- Prepare detailed requests for supplies, equipment, and materials, including quantities and prices, and make purchases as directed.
- Maintain an organized inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies needed for maintenance operations.
- Notify supervisors or office staff in a timely manner when facilities-related supplies, equipment, or materials need replenishment or replacement.
- Utilize working knowledge of Barber Colman Network 8000 and Johnson Controls energy management systems to act as backup support to the Plumber.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable licensure regulations and relevant codes.
- Communicate with and, when requested, direct the work of subcontractors and vendors on maintenance-related projects.
- Communicate regularly with management to align work priorities and meet departmental needs.
- Work independently under general supervision, following department standard operating procedures and referring purchase requests to the appropriate supervisor.
- Adhere to all safety practices and standards in every aspect of the job.
- Provide timely responses to work orders and assignments and complete tasks within expected time frames.
- Perform duties independently according to broadly prescribed renovation and maintenance project plans.
- Complete required administrative processes and produce necessary documentation and reports accurately and on time.
- Collaborate effectively with Buildings & Grounds staff and other employees across the institution.
- Identify and report items in need of repair or that pose safety hazards inside and outside buildings, and forward urgent issues to the appropriate office for immediate attention.
- Keep all work areas, including any assigned vehicle, clean, organized, and safe at all times.
- Provide reliable coverage for the department and be occasionally available for off-hour emergencies.
- Work a reasonable amount of overtime when necessary to meet departmental needs.
- Occasionally perform grounds or trades tasks such as moving furniture and assisting with event setups as directed.
- Assist with other Buildings & Grounds functions and perform additional duties as assigned.
- Occasionally oversee and provide hands-on direction to students and temporary or casual workers as assigned.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of hands-on, full-time commercial journey-level plumbing and heating maintenance experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Trades and technical schooling equivalent to two (2) years of college in a relevant field.
- Current Massachusetts EPA Approved HVAC Technician Certification.
- Valid unrestricted Massachusetts driver’s license.
- Proven skills in the safe use of hand and power tools used in buildings and grounds maintenance.
- Overall working knowledge of general maintenance and repair operations and practices.
- Basic working knowledge of computers for documentation, communication, and systems interfaces.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, layouts, and written technical materials accurately.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and follow standard operating procedures.
- Strong commitment to safety practices, including adherence to lockout/tagout and material safety data guidelines.
- Ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergency and urgent maintenance situations.
- Experience working with commercial boilers, furnaces, air handlers, and related HVAC and plumbing controls.
- Experience performing preventative maintenance programs for plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
- Working knowledge of Barber Colman Network 8000 and Johnson Controls energy management systems.
- Experience with swimming pool maintenance and associated systems.
- Experience assisting with the design or modification of plumbing and heating systems.
- Ability to coordinate with subcontractors and vendors and provide direction when needed.
- Experience overseeing or guiding student workers or temporary staff in a maintenance environment.
- Strong organizational skills for managing inventories of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Ability to produce clear documentation, reports, and administrative records related to maintenance activities.
- Capability to perform occasional grounds or trades tasks, including moving furniture and supporting event setups.

Work Environment
The work takes place across campus buildings and grounds, involving both interior and exterior environments. You will work with boilers, furnaces, air handlers, plumbing fixtures, HVAC systems, swimming pool equipment, and energy management systems such as Barber Colman Network 8000 and Johnson Controls. The role requires the regular use of hand and power tools, as well as basic computer use for work orders, documentation, and communication. The schedule is primarily standard daytime hours, with a reasonable amount of overtime as needed and occasional availability required for off-hour emergencies. The position is hands-on and physically active, including walking through facilities, inspecting equipment, performing repairs, and occasionally moving furniture or assisting with event setups. Safety practices are emphasized, including adherence to lockout/tagout procedures and material safety data guidelines, and maintaining clean, orderly, and safe work areas and vehicles.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Milton, MA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $36.00/hr.
