Science Instructor - summer camp role
Pleasant Bay Community Boating is an organization that offers boating, marine education, and environmental stewardship opportunities. We are dedicated to serving all members of the community including those with physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities, as well as under-served communities. We offer youth and adult sailing lessons, community outreach sailing experiences, marine science camps and hands-on activities, and boat rentals. Our fleet includes Flying Scots, Sunfish, 420’s, Catboats, Kayaks, Lasers, Opti’s, and a solar-powered floating classroom.
Pleasant Bay Community Boating is looking for a seasonal Science Instructor to assist in operating the Science and Sailing summer camp. This summer camp takes place from June 22nd - August 14th with a Monday-Friday schedule. Instructors will work from 9 AM – 3:30 PM, supervising students ranging from ages 7-14 years old split into older and younger age groups. Part-time work assisting with school field trips is available starting in mid-May and some additional shifts may be available in late August-early September.
Responsibilities:
- ·Work with Science Coordinator and other science staff to teach informal, outdoor lessons for participants of all ages, mainly marine science camp
- There will be the opportunity to work with the Science Coordinator to improve marine science camp curriculum, which deals with topics like global climate change, ecosystem ecology, and weather
- Assist in teaching lessons and leading hands-on activities for marine science campers ages 7-14, who are on the property daily from 9:30 AM – 3 PM from June 22nd through August 14th
- Act as a crew member on our 37’ floating classroom and help implement curriculum developed for the vessel, mainly for marine science campers
- Help enforce PBCB’s water safety protocols and act as a role model on the bay
- Ensure that youth program participants are always supervised
- Report issues with boats, students, renters, curriculum, etc. to a supervisor
General Skills:
- ·Think on your feet, adjust plans as needed, and be a strong leader for participants and science instructors
- Work alongside PBCB’s directors and other instructors to make sure participants are learning, progressing, and staying safe
- Always model respect for the water, each other, and our equipment
- Follow all PBCB policies
Requirements:
- ·You must be 18 or older by June 22nd, 2026
- Strong background or interest in teaching, outdoor education, and STEM desired
- Degree in a relevant field considered but not required (we welcome students!)
- Current certification or willingness to obtain CPR/First Aid
- Any additional certifications or experience related to science, sailing, powerboating, leadership, working with children, or water safety will be strongly considered
- Availability for the duration of our summer camp season required
- Employees are given a complimentary boat rental pass when off duty
- Salary offers will be determined based on experience and relevant certifications, but will fall in the range of $18-20/hour
