Microbiologist III

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is looking for a dedicated and experienced professional to join our team as a Microbiologist III. This pivotal role provides vital administrative leadership across all Lab departments during weekends and as needed, during the week. The incumbent plays a key part in driving quality improvement by evaluating and recommending new instrumentation and methodologies, overseeing workload and staffing, overseeing client services, and ensuring compliance with TJC policies as well as state and federal regulations. Please note that this position requires coverage every weekend.

Schedule - Saturday and Sunday from 7am - 10pm & Thursday from 7am - 5pm. Required to work Holidays as deemed necessary by the Laboratory Supervisor/ Lab Director.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
  • Perform diagnostic testing across disciplines including Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Microbiology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and Serology using standard laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure the accuracy and quality of test results by modifying procedures, providing in-service education, and validating new testing methodologies.
  • Oversight of reference laboratory interactions for sample handling, test results, and validation requests.
  • Maintain laboratory operations by preparing reagents, calibrating equipment, conducting quality control tests, and performing repairs.
  • Assist with bone marrow procedures, preparing slides, and handling pathology specimens.
  • Oversee laboratory compliance with CAP proficiency testing, TJC policies, and other regulatory standards.
  • Evaluate test requests and provide consultation to medical staff on test significance and patient care.
  • Monitor staff competency, document evaluations, and ensure adherence to quality assurance protocols.
  • Attend hospital and laboratory-related meetings and conferences to stay informed on advancements in diagnostic testing.
  • Maintain accurate records, compile statistics, and oversee laboratory inventory.


Required Qualifications:

  • Expertise in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Coagulation, Blood Bank, and related laboratory practices.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, laboratory instrumentation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to perform quality assurance tasks including calibration, linearity, and proficiency testing.
  • Strong communication skills for advising medical staff and preparing detailed reports.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and laboratory information systems (LIS).


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understand microbiology, immunology, and molecular biology principles and practices.
  • Experience with quality assurance protocols specific to diagnostic testing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and aptitude for effective presentations.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, nights, and varied shifts as needed.

About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have (A) at least five (5) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or academic research experience in microbiology, molecular biology, or medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field, of which (B) at least one (1) year must be in a supervisory or leadership capacity, or (C), any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.

Based on assignment, applicants must meet related Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) requirements for High Complexity Testing.

Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, biology or medical laboratory technology, or related scientific field, may be substituted for two (2) years of the required (A) experience.

II. A Master's degree with a major in microbiology, molecular microbiology, biology or medical laboratory technology or equivalent scientific field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required (A) experience.

III. A Doctoral degree with a major in microbiology, molecular biology, medical technology or related scientific field, may be substituted for four (4) years of the required (A) experience.

S alary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range
