LOCATION: New England Region (MA, VT, CT) (Hybrid)

ABOUT US

Generation Citizen offers tools for the rising generation to build civic skills and make America the inclusive, multi-racial democracy that we need. We are transforming how civics is taught by providing equity-rooted, real-world civic education, which helps students understand how governments function and how they can make a difference in the system. Through hands-on civic education, legislative advocacy, coalition building, and youth leadership development, we teach young people how to have a voice and become active citizens in their communities.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a skilled and passionate Program Director, New England to join our diverse and inclusive team. In this role, you will serve as the primary driver of regional growth, leading the New England region’s Sales & Partnership Development efforts to vigorously pursue new school and district partners and secure Fee-for-Service contracts. You will manage the region’s overall program implementation, ensure program quality assurance, and lead a regional programmatic team to deliver the core community-based civics curriculum. The Program Director will steward all school and district partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability and will report directly to the New England Region’s Executive Director.

The New England Region Program Director thrives on managing equitable, collaborative teams and building partnerships across schools, districts, and the broader community. They are a self-starter and a constant and collaborative learner.

This position works primarily remotely but will be expected to travel, including participating in limited overnight travel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Sales & Partnership Development (50%)

  • Drive strategic pursuit and cultivation of new school and district partnerships to achieve recruitment and retention goals, including securing Fee For Service contracts in alignment with GC’s strategic plan.

  • Manage and maintain New England Region Salesforce data, including all data entry, for school partnerships, conference events, and network connections.

Program Team Leadership & Oversight (25%)

  • Lead, manage, and coach the region’s program managers to support program implementation, ensure high-quality execution, consistently achieve quality metrics, and foster continuous staff development.
  • Partner with the Program & Impact Team to drive strategic use of programmatic data, overseeing the analysis and reporting of performance metrics and forecasts to inform regional strategy.
  • Lead the regional team in executing the Civics Day showcase, including supporting partner teachers and schools in Civics Day engagement.
  • Plan and facilitate regional program team meetings, retreats, and step-backs to support staff learning, collaboration, and goal execution.
  • Direct the strategic planning and oversight of all nationally developed teacher professional development institutes, delegating logistics and supporting high-quality facilitation by the regional team.
  • Manage a small teacher caseload as needed.

Program Strategy (15%)

  • Set annual programmatic goals and ensure progress toward annual goals in close collaboration with the Program and Impact Team.
  • Work with the New England Executive Director and finance team to strategically build and manage the region’s annual program budget, and oversee the programmatic team to ensure the sustainable use of programmatic funds in the New England region.

External Relations & Special Initiatives (10%)

  • Work closely with the New England Executive Director and the National Development Team to ensure adequate philanthropic support, partnering on strong funder relationships, grant writing, and reporting to achieve financial sustainability alongside Fee-for-Service.
  • Partner with the New England Executive Director and the Civic Voice & Policy team to develop and execute the region’s policy and advocacy approach.
  • Drive regional policy goals, including supporting campaigns, expanding regional policy efforts, and increasing uptake of the Civics Seal where applicable.
  • Engage elected officials by inviting them to Civics Day events and accompanying them on school visits.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • 5+ years of nonprofit or education experience, with 3+ years of partnership recruitment and development experience
  • Experience working with middle or high school students, educators, and administrators, and familiarity with the language of education standards, curricular development, and school priorities.
  • Experience managing a diverse team of people with varying degrees of seniority.
  • A self-starter with the ability to navigate ambiguity and project manage multiple streams of work simultaneously
  • Comply with local, federal, and site-based COVID-19 vaccination requirements
  • Reliable transportation and flexibility to regularly travel within the New England region and beyond.
  • Preferred: 3+ years in a classroom or adult learning setting
  • Preferred: Experience with data-informed evaluation to enhance program scalability and ensure alignment with key organizational priorities.

NOTE

This position works primarily remotely but will be expected to travel no more than 20% to attend monthly in-person team days, organizational retreats, special events, external partner meetings, conferences, lobbying, and other potential in-person activities.
