The monitor educator will be stationed at the lake boat ramp and will report to DCR Lakes and Ponds Program staff.
As part of the Commonwealth’s effort to control the spread of non-native aquatic invasive species (AIS) in our lakes and ponds, the educator will perform voluntary inspections on boats, trailers, and gear. Ramp monitors will look for, and remove, any hitchhiking plants or animals and will distribute educational materials to boaters. Boat ramp monitors may also be offered the opportunity to participate in additional DCR Lakes and Ponds AIS programs.

- Prior to starting work, the Educators must participate in training conducted by the DCR Lakes and Ponds staff on the identification of invasive aquatic species and the procedure for conducting boat inspections and surveys.
- Conduct voluntary boat inspections for aquatic plants or animals attached to the boats/trailers/gear. Boat inspections will be conducted only on the boats of individuals that have agreed to participate and will be limited to the external portions of the boat and trailer. Boat ramp monitors may ask boaters if they are willing to empty bait buckets, live-wells and cooling water on dry land away from shore.
- Distribute educational materials including but not limited to materials on aquatic invasive species, boater safety and boat decontamination. Provide information regarding boat inspections and boat washing to boaters who agree to participate in the program.
- Conduct a brief survey of boater’s awareness of invasive aquatic species and their spread.
