Accountant

St. Mark's School

SUMMARY:
The Accountant plays a vital role in supporting the financial operations of St. Mark’s School. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate accounting records, preparing financial reports, supporting compliance requirements, and assisting with audit processes. The Accountant works closely with the Controller and provides support for tuition billing, auxiliary programs, bookstore operations, and petty cash oversight.

ESSENTIAL RESPOBSIBILITIES:

General Accountant

  • Maintain accuracy and integrity of the general ledger
  • Prepare and post recurring, standard, and adjusting journal entries
  • Reconcile bank accounts and balance sheet accounts monthly
  • Maintain detailed monthly reconciliation schedules for all balance sheet accounts, ensuring timely resolution of discrepancies
  • Monitor and properly reclassify prepaid revenue and expenses
  • Assist in preparation of monthly financial statements
  • Support annual budget preparation and monitoring
  • Prepare supporting schedules for the annual audit

Compliance

  • Assist with preparation and filing of Form 990
  • Prepare and issue annual 1099 forms
  • Record, reconcile, and file monthly sales tax reports
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards

Auxiliary & Operational Accounting

  • Record and reconcile bookstore and Lion’s Den sales, inventory, and cost of goods sold
  • Assist with periodic physical inventory counts
  • Monitor and oversee petty cash reconciliations and transactions
  • Support tuition billing and accounts receivable tracking

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP; nonprofit accounting experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems
  • Strong reconciliation and analytical skills
  • High attention to detail and accuracy

PERFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in nonprofit or independent school accounting
  • Familiarity with tuition management systems
  • Experience supporting annual audits
