Plumber A (Master Plumber)
Maintains, inspects, operates, and repairs all buildings’ plumbing, heating, domestic water, sanitary systems and related components at Babson College; adjusts those systems as necessary for optimal performance to maintain compliance with state/local building codes, and other government regulations by performing the following essential duties.
The hours for this position are Monday - Friday 8AM - 4:30PM
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Operate, adjust, and inspect all buildings’ plumbing, heating, domestic water, sanitary systems and related components to detect hazards, malfunctions, the need for adjustment and/or replacement of such items as fixtures, piping, valves, drains, appliances, as well as other similar or related types of equipment.
- Maintain all buildings’ plumbing, heating, domestic water, sanitary systems, fixtures, piping, valves, drains, appliances and back flow valves, as well as other similar or related equipment.
- Repair or replace all buildings’ faulty plumbing, heating, domestic water, sanitary systems and related components such as fixtures, piping, valves, drains, seals, gaskets, pumps, appliances, as well as other similar or related of equipment.
- Perform analysis and diagnostic testing of campus plumbing, heating, domestic water, and sanitary systems to isolate and identify the root causes of systems’ failure or inadequate performance; develop interim and permanent solutions for identified systems’ failures; participate in campus audits to determine optimal operating procedures and develop new system(s) strategies.
- Document all repairs, maintenance and comments on assigned service work order slips; record routine system(s) operating condition, responses to equipment alarms, maintenance work performed and other pertinent information in applicable equipment records and databases; maintain files and diagrams generated from field investigation.
- Act as a work site coordinator for executing work involving other in-house technicians and contractors, to keep systems functioning within original design operating parameters; facilitates repairs to any and all plumbing, heating, domestic water or sanitary systems at Babson College.
- Balance single shop work assignments with present workloads in coordination and support of the Service Response Manager and Trades Supervisor’s work plans.
- Respond to and correct deficiencies identified on assigned service order work slips, executing new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, to provide access for future maintenance and to avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable repairs, while meeting manufacturers’ installation specifications and local codes/requirements.
- Provide assistance to other department trade group members as needed in the completion of work tasks; provide appropriate support in major campus events such as commencement and opening of school; participate in snow removal activities as needed to maintain campus operations.

WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED
High School diploma or equivalent technical school; valid Massachusetts Master Plumber’s license; valid Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber’s license; will attend safety training as required by Management.
Four to six years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be able to function well in a team/community environment, displaying common courtesies and politeness; frequently interacts with students, teachers, co-workers, and administrators.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, material safety data sheets (MSDS), mechanical drawings, operating, maintenance, repair, installation and procedure instructions or manuals.
Ability to write out routine reports, fill out equipment logs and provide descriptions of equipment problems and needs.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to understand, troubleshoot and repair the colleges’ plumbing systems .
Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to order replacement parts and stock to perform the daily job requirements.
Ability to interact with Foreman, Manager and Directors to update and inform of any potential problems and to supply them with suggested corrections.
HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK
All Babson College faculty and staff authorized to work on campus must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including any appropriate boosters. Must have had a valid unrestricted U.S. Driver’s License for one year, and maintain throughout employment an insurable (as determined by the College’s insurer’s criteria) or a satisfactory driving record; must successfully complete and pass the College’s vehicle training program within the first 60 days of employment; annual or more frequent review of employee’s driving record based on the College insurer’s criteria; and safety training as required by management.

- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
- Usually moderate noise level.
- Regularly required to work extended hours and participate in an afterhours emergency call-back program.

- Operates a motor vehicle on a daily basis.
- Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear, and smell.
- Occasionally required to sit.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Regularly climb and/or balance up to 10 feet and frequently climb and or balance up to 25 feet.
- Regular use of close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
This is a non-exempt position with an hourly rate of $33.51. This position includes paid sick leave where required by law. Eligibility, accrual, and usage will follow applicable state and local regulations.
