Developmental Specialist Early Intervention
Hours per week between 30 – 40
Salary $53,000 - $59,000 per year
Position Summary
The role of a Developmental Specialist is to provide a variety of Early Intervention services including home visits, center visits, assessments, and playgroups.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Service Coordination which includes, but is not limited to:
- Working collaboratively with families to develop and implement Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP) in compliance with DPH (Department of Public Health) standards.
- Monitoring the needs for additional services and support and making appropriate referrals.
- Completing required IFSP reviews and re-evaluations in a timely manner.
- Advocating effectively for children within and outside the Program.
- Convening and chairing team meetings for clients on a periodic basis.
Serve as coordinator for the playgroup team, when needed.
Evaluation, including but not limited to:
- Working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide developmental evaluations to children entering the Program and coming up for eligibility renewal.
- Developing knowledge of the purpose and use of a variety of assessment tools appropriate for use with infants, toddlers, and their families.
- Presenting results of evaluations to parents and, when appropriate, makes referrals for further testing including diagnostic evaluations.
Transition Planning, including but not limited to:
- Working with families to initiate transition planning in a timely manner.
- Developing an understanding of the services and programs at the local preschool level.
- Communicating effectively within the Early Intervention Program and with SPED personnel to facilitate planning.
- Participating in Transition Planning Conferences and IEP meetings.
- Empowering parents to become effective advocates for their children.
Productivity, including but not limited to:
- Maintaining a schedule of billable hours equivalent to 50% of the actual weekly hours worked.
- Scheduling 55% billable time in order to achieve 50% requirement as measured on a monthly basis.
- Consistently keeping scheduled appointments with families and using time management skills to assure that scheduled activities begin and end on time.
- Maintaining an accurate daily planner/calendar/PDA file to verify billable activities for audit purposes.
Documentation, including but not limited to:
- Writing accurate and complete progress notes for all billable services provided and filing them in a timely manner.
- Completing timesheets, billing forms, IFSP pages and other required documentation in accordance with Program business rules.
- Maintaining up to date personnel forms including required certifications and licenses as required by the Program and Department of Public Health (DPH).
Meetings, including but not limited to:
- Attending weekly team meetings with Early Intervention Staff.
- Participating in other meetings such as case reviews, IFSP reviews, parent workshops, and IEP meetings with local school system staff as needed.
Communication including but not limited to:
- Communicating appropriately with supervisors, colleagues, children, and families.
- Accepting and giving constructive criticism when appropriate.
- Utilizing appropriate channels of communication for grievances, issues, ideas, concerns, etc.
- Observing appropriate confidentiality protocols.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Within three years of employment, completes the requirements established by the Department of Public Health (DPH) for Full Early Intervention Specialist Certification.
- Valid drivers' license and an acceptable driving record as well as the ongoing use of an automobile.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, consumers, family members, and co-workers.
- Ability to write formal and informal reports and correspondence.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in early childhood education or in Special Education.
- Experience in working with infants and/or young children.
Physical Demands
- Will often require sitting on the floor or at small tables so individuals will need to be able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl, or otherwise physically engage with infants and young children.
- Will require lifting up and placing down children weighing up to 45 pounds.
