LAW STUDENT INTERN
The Office of the Bar Counsel in Massachusetts (OBC) conducts confidential investigations and prosecutes ethical misconduct by Massachusetts attorneys before hearing committees, the Board of Bar Overseers (BBO), and the Supreme Judicial Court. The office also educates attorneys on the Rules of Professional Conduct, provides information and support to members of the bar on the ethical practice of law, and explains the disciplinary process and alternative remedies to members of the public. GENERAL SUMMARY
The OBC is seeking law student interns for Summer 2026.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Law student interns may be assigned to assist Assistant Bar Counsel in the review and investigation of complaints against attorneys, the preparation of formal charges, and the presentation of evidence at hearings. Investigation can include reviewing and summarizing large volumes of file material and court documents, as well as obtaining information from a variety of sources. Case-specific research projects can include the interpretation and application of the ethics rules to specific situations, the appropriate sanctions for misconduct, and the applicability of procedural rules unique to disciplinary proceedings. Research projects can also include issues of general applicability to the work of the office, such as monitoring the consideration of changes to the ethics rules and compiling significant cases on the interpretation and application of specific provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct.
WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The Office of Bar Counsel currently operates in a hybrid work environment. Normal office working conditions including frequent sitting and computer monitor use. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. COMPENSATION
The summer law student internships are paid positions ($20 per hour) based on approximately twenty (20) hours per week for about eight (8) weeks.
