Lower School Special Education Teacher
Job Description
The Lower School Special Education Teacher is responsible for managing a caseload of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans. This role provides specialized instruction and support in accordance with students' individualized plans while ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and school regulations. The Special Education Teacher collaborates closely with general education teachers, families, administrators, and related service providers to promote each student's academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct and indirect special education services to students as outlined in their IEPs and/or Section 504 Plans.
- Develop and deliver engaging, differentiated instruction that supports students' individual learning needs and goals.
- Establish clear learning objectives for lessons and effectively communicate expectations to students.
- Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies and specialized teaching techniques to support the development of academic, language, cognitive, sensory, and social-emotional skills.
- Adapt curriculum, instructional materials, and assessments to meet diverse learner needs.
- Create and maintain a structured, positive classroom environment that aligns with the school's behavior management expectations.
- Maintain accurate and timely service logs, lesson plans, progress monitoring data, and other required documentation in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Serve as the case manager for assigned students, ensuring compliance with all IEP and Section 504 requirements.
- Schedule, prepare for, and facilitate annual and reevaluation IEP meetings for students on your caseload.
- Complete quarterly progress reports and communicate student progress to families and team members.
- Act as the primary point of contact for students and families on your caseload.
- Collaborate regularly with general education teachers, related service providers, school counselors, administrators, and families to support student success.
- Participate as an active member of multidisciplinary teams and attend weekly team meetings.
- Assist with the preparation and administration of state and standardized assessments, including appropriate testing accommodations.
- Maintain professional knowledge through ongoing professional development, training, and curriculum planning activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including school supervision, administrative tasks, and other responsibilities that support the overall operation of the school.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field required; Master's degree preferred.
- Massachusetts licensure in Special Education (or eligibility for licensure).
- SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Endorsement required.
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and special education regulations and compliance requirements.
- Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring IEPs.
- Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues while maintaining a high level of professionalism.
