Make an Impact Through Innovative Occupational Therapy

Baystate Health is looking for an Occupational Therapist (OT) to play an important role in advancing innovative treatments through clinical research. In this role, you’ll combine your clinical expertise with research-driven protocols to evaluate participants, deliver specialized interventions, and help support the development of new approaches to rehabilitation.

The Occupational Therapist is responsible for conducting comprehensive functional assessments, administering standardized assessment tools, and providing treatment in accordance with experimental clinical trial protocols. The OT works closely with patients, research teams, and the multidisciplinary team (MDT) while ensuring strict adherence to study procedures, treatment certifications, and documentation requirements.

What You’ll Do

Evaluation & Assessment

  • Gather comprehensive information to evaluate participants' functional status, including activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), leisure activities, daily structure, and social skills.
  • Administer standardized assessments, which may include:
    • Modified Rankin Scale
    • Fugl-Meyer Assessment
    • Box and Blocks Test (BBT)
    • Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)
    • Modified Ashworth Scale (mAS)
    • Other assessments required by individual clinical trial protocols.
  • Maintain required certifications for standardized assessment batteries and clinical trial procedures.
  • Identify participant strengths, assets, functional limitations, and treatment needs.
  • Develop problem-based treatment plans based on assessment findings.
  • Communicate assessment results and recommendations effectively to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Collaborate with participants and other practitioners to establish appropriate treatment goals.
  • Report suspected abuse to the appropriate state agency in accordance with regulatory requirements.

Treatment & Intervention

  • Establish therapeutic relationships with participants while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Provide individual and group occupational therapy using established OT and psychosocial treatment modalities.
  • Deliver interventions in accordance with approved experimental protocols, including all applicable precautions and contraindications.
  • Independently perform procedures and manage complex cases within scope of practice.
  • Monitor participant behaviors, symptoms, response to treatment, and progress.
  • Reassess participants and collaborate with the MDT to modify treatment plans as appropriate.
  • Participate in discharge planning and establish appropriate follow-up recommendations.

Clinical Trial Responsibilities

  • Follow all experimental protocols and clinical trial procedures consistently and accurately.
  • Maintain required certifications related to clinical trial treatments and standardized assessment batteries.
  • Become proficient in the Telerehab2 system , including its computer, console, input devices, tables/chairs, laptops, and related equipment.
  • Ensure all assessments and interventions are performed according to study-specific requirements.
  • Support the integrity and consistency of clinical trial data through accurate assessment, treatment, and documentation.

Documentation

  • Complete thorough and timely assessment reports and problem-related treatment plans.
  • Update interventions and reports for multidisciplinary treatment plans.
  • Complete required group graphics and other program documentation within established timelines.
  • Enter concise, clinically relevant progress notes related to specific treatment goals.
  • Complete discharge summaries with clear, specific recommendations.

Supervision & Professional Development

  • Orient students and new hires in accordance with program standards and supervisor direction.
  • Provide supervision to Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) and students as required.
  • Maintain competency and certifications necessary to support assigned clinical trials and treatment protocols.
  • Demonstrate independent clinical practice or the ability to progress toward independent practice within 12 months.

Required Experience

  • Bachelors Degree, Required
  • Licensed Occupational Therapist in MA, required
  • At least one year of post-degree clinical experience, required
  • Experience with a psychiatric population is preferred

Compensation

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

$47.14 - $54.19 - $64.11
