Weekly Hours: Up to 10 hours per week

Bargaining Unit: Non-Union
Hiring Rate: $800 monthly stipend and $130 monthly travel allowance
Department & Supervisor: Director of Public Works
Summary
The Town of Shrewsbury, a full-service local government committed to excellence, is seeking a Sealer of Weights and Measures to perform essential technical and inspectional work that ensures fair and accurate commercial transactions.
This part-time role is key to maintaining public trust by verifying that weighing and measuring devices across the community comply with state and local regulations. As the Town’s primary resource for marketplace fairness, the Sealer supports consumer protection and helps ensure an even playing field for residents and businesses alike.

What You'll Do:
Perform Technical Inspections: Test, calibrate, and seal or condemn a variety of commercial devices, including retail scales, gasoline dispensers, and fuel oil truck meters.
Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Enforce Massachusetts General Laws and local ordinances related to unit pricing, scanner accuracy, and merchandise labeling.
Conduct Field Monitoring: Perform random inspections of retail establishments to verify the weight of pre-packaged goods and check for required vendor licensing.
Investigate Consumer Concerns: Respond to and resolve complaints regarding short weights or measures through thorough research and corrective action.
Manage Documentation & Fees: Maintain accurate inspection logs, file mandatory annual reports with the State Division of Standards, and collect applicable sealing fees for the Town.
What You’ll Bring:
High School diploma (or equivalent) plus 1–3 years of mechanical or technical experience, ideally in weights and measures, municipal operations, or a related trade.
Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and the ability to obtain certification as a Sealer of Weights and Measures from the Commonwealth within 12 months of hire.
Regulatory Knowledge: Proficiency in MGL Chapters 94, 98, 99, and 101, as well as NIST (formerly NBS) Handbooks 44 and 133.
Analytical & Mathematical Skills: Strong ability to assess complex measurement issues and calculate tolerances across Avoirdupois, Metric, Troy, and Apothecary systems.
Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and the interpersonal skills required to conduct firm, professional enforcement in retail and industrial environments
