Principal software engineer

The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for developing and delivering SaaS solutions to HR organizations.

This Hybrid role requires in-person work at our Newton, MA headquarters.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of modern, responsive web and mobile applications using Angular, Ionic, Knockout.js, and standard JavaScript/CSS.

  • Serve as a technical authority and front-end architect, guiding the team in building scalable, maintainable UI components and design systems.

  • Collaborate closely with UX/UI designers, product managers, and backend engineers to deliver seamless user experiences.

  • Champion best practices in front-end performance, accessibility, and responsive design.

  • Be part of a fast paced, highly technical development team responsible for developing and delivering SaaS solutions to HR organizations

  • Serve as a lead in the design, and development of software systems and subsystems. Work within the software team and across other lines of business to determine the proper approach to software development challenges.

  • Research and recommend new technologies and approaches. Learn and prototype. Make recommendations based on upcoming product and project roadmaps

  • Conduct design and code reviews and provide feedback on engineering best practices

  • Mentor and support fellow engineers through thoughtful code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical design sessions

  • Participate in all phases of SDLC: from system analysis to technical design and development and test to deployment and support

  • Contribute to backend development using Python and FastAPI, particularly in designing APIs that support front-end needs.

  • Leverage GCP services and CI/CD pipelines to deliver high-quality software efficiently.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • 5 years of professional software development experience, with a strong emphasis on front-end technologies
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering or 5 years of additional experience considered in lieu of degree

Additional Job Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or Engineering

  • 3 years experience of FastAPI

  • Deep expertise in Angular and/or Ionic, JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.

  • Experience with Knockout.js and legacy front-end systems is a plus.

  • Familiarity with RESTful API integration and backend services using Python and FastAPI.

  • Web Development (Angular, jQuery a strong plus)

  • RESTful Web Services

  • Agile methodologies experience (e.g. Scrum) a strong plus

  • Excellent understanding of engineering best practices and software design

  • Excellent written/documentation and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

  • Willing to take on projects and challenges and can be flexible

  • Demonstrated success meeting and exceeding business objectives

  • Mobile app development experience a plus

  • Mobile First and Responsive Web Design experience a plus

  • Strong understanding of responsive design, cross-browser compatibility, and front-end performance optimization preferred

  • Experience with MongoDB and NoSQL data modeling a plus

  • Agile methodologies (e.g., Scrum) experience preferred.

  • Track record of mentoring engineers and fostering a culture of learning and code quality preferred

Compensation:

The annual salary for this position is between $122,000 - 158,000 annually. The pay range listed here is what Bright Horizons in good faith anticipates offering for this job opening. Actual compensation offers within this range will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education and training, certifications, geography, and other relevant business or organizational factors.

Compensation: 122,000 - 158,000
