Assistant Project Manager (Estimating)
Join a dynamic and growing civil construction company specializing in site work projects, including earthwork, utilities, grading, paving, and related civil activities. As an Assistant Project Manager (Estimating), you will play a key role in supporting the planning, estimating, and execution of projects from preconstruction through closeout. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with experienced project managers and superintendents, gain hands-on experience in both office and field settings, and contribute to the successful delivery of projects that shape local infrastructure. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and eager to learn, with a strong interest in civil construction and project management.
Responsibilities
- Assist in identifying new project opportunities through project boards and outreach to general contractors.
- Support the preparation of detailed cost estimates for site work projects, including earthwork, grading, utilities, storm drainage, and paving.
- Perform quantity takeoffs based on project plans and specifications.
- Solicit, review, and compare subcontractor and supplier quotes.
- Help develop bid pricing, scope clarifications, and value engineering options.
- Maintain historical cost data and estimating databases for bid results and unit price comparisons.
- Assist with project setup, including budgets, schedules, and job cost tracking.
- Support the preparation and management of project schedules and look-ahead plans in collaboration with project managers and superintendents.
- Coordinate with field supervisors, subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors to ensure smooth project execution.
- Track submittals, RFIs, change orders, and project documentation.
- Assist with change order pricing and documentation.
- Participate in project meetings, site walks, and progress reviews.
- Support compliance with safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
- Assist with job cost reporting, budget updates, and tracking project expenses.
- Support monthly billing, pay applications, and subcontractor payment processing.
- Help close out projects, including final documentation and cost reviews.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in site construction (earthwork, utilities, concrete, paving, or similar).
- Associate’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong understanding of construction plans and specifications.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Team-oriented with a willingness to learn and a strong work ethic.
- Experience with estimating software (such as Adobe, Trimble Procontractor, or similar) is preferred.
- Familiarity with job cost accounting and project management/scheduling software (such as Procore) is a plus.
- Basic understanding of DOT, municipal, or private site development standards/specifications is preferred.
- Field experience in site work or heavy civil construction is a plus.
