POSITION TITLE: Staff Associate - ASL Interpreter (part-time)
REPORTS TO: Title IX & Affirmative Action Officer
POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit position without benefits not to exceed 18.5 hours per week.
LOCATION: Fall River with travel to New Bedford, Attleboro, and Taunton
SALARY: $50-70/hr depending on experience.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Part-Time Staff ASL Interpreter/Coordinator provides high-quality, professional ASL-English interpreting services, primarily onsite, for students, employees, and visitors who are Deaf or hard of hearing. The position also provides ASL interpreting for College events and coordinates day-to-day logistics to support effective communication access across all Bristol locations. This role blends direct interpreting with coordination responsibilities, including scheduling, third party vendor communication as needed, and equipment readiness, to ensure timely, compliant, and consumer centered services in alignment with the ADA, Section 504, and institutional policies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide onsite ASL-English and English-ASL interpreting for students, employees and visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing. This includes coursework, teaching, advising, and a variety of campus events.
- Coordinate weekly interpreting schedules with other staff interpreters, track requests, confirm assignments, and arrange coverage for last-minute needs.
- Serve as a liaison between Access and Disability Services, IT, Lash Center, and other key stakeholders for event and classroom accessibility.
- Serve as a liaison with approved ASL referral vendors to fill requests as needed.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to required reports and audits.
- Promote best practices for accessible meetings and classrooms.
- Uphold privacy and confidentiality standards such as FERPA or employee privacy.
- Uphold RID code of professional conduct and ethics.
- Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.
- Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of five (5) years experience with national certification (e.g. RID NIC, CDI, BEI) or MCDHH approval, passing score in written RID exam and five (5) years experience in Higher Education.*
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience shall be considered.
- Fluent ASL/English proficiency with demonstrated interpreting skill in higher-education or comparable settings.
- Strong organizational skills to coordinate complex scheduling and accessibility needs.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications, Zoom, and basic A/V set up.
- The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff with a commitment to equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's or associate Degree in related field.
- Experience coordinating employee and student interpreting requests and placements.
- Experience working with interpreter agencies.
- Experience with ASL to English voicing skills for professional Deaf consumers.
- Knowledge of specialized interpreting needs, including but not limited to, Deafblind, CDI, performance, legal, etc.
- Knowledge of RID K-12/EIPA and familiarity with higher-ed accommodation frameworks.
- Knowledge of VRI technology platforms, video conferencing set up, Banner, HR/CMS, Statement about specific technology knowledge that would enhance the position.
- Robust understanding and demonstrated inclusion of best practices focused on access, equity, student success, and high impact practices.
