SENIOR PLANNER, Campus Planning
Reporting to the Executive Director of Campus Planning, the Senior Planner will support Boston University's (BU) overall mission of education and research. As a key team member within Planning, Design and Construction (PDC), this position will serve the full range of Boston University's real estate portfolio which includes nearly 15 million square feet and over 140 acres of land. The Planning team leads physical planning, programming, and placemaking in support of Boston University's (BU) overall mission of education and research. Space is an essential university asset, and the department acts as stewards of the university's resources. The Senior Planner will bring a holistic approach to planning, grounded in BUs strategic vision and values, and balanced with technical and regulatory requirements. This position will work closely with academic and auxiliary partners for short- and long-term planning to enable emerging research directions, changes in educational delivery, and enhancements to student life and learning. The Senior Planner will be integral to the public approvals process in collaboration with many university stakeholders, including Government and Community Affairs and the Office of General Counsel. This position will also work in conjunction with the Facilities Maintenance and Operations leadership and Sustainability leadership to strategically address asset renewal for BUs urban campus environment. A significant focus for this role will be space programming and planning and rely on strong verbal, written and graphic communication skills. The Senior Planner will identify strategic opportunities to bring together programmatic goals with aesthetic and infrastructure renewal of campus buildings.
Required Skills
Qualifications (Minimum education & experience level required):
- Master's Degree with 8+ years of experience or equivalent.
- Background from design and/or development industry including the fields of landscape architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, with a focus on higher education or institutional portfolio management.
- Proven ability to negotiate and balance expectations and priorities of demanding constituencies while keeping the University's priorities in view.
- Ability to obtain appropriate results with limited direction, shows initiative, and ability to manage multiple relationships working effectively in a team environment.
- Robust knowledge of the City of Boston zoning, planning, and design regulations as they relate to planning and pre-design studies. Prior experience preparing documents for review by the Public Improvements Commission, Parks Department, or other entities is a plus.
Skill requirements (include complexity of position):
- Advanced skills with GIS and/or CAD software packages (AutoCAD), spreadsheets (excel), and analytic tools (GIS/PowerBI). Extensive computer experience in word processing software and comfort navigating CAFM systems is required.
Interpersonal skills (including personal interaction):
- Team-oriented and comfortable in a fast-paced, high-performance setting.
- Strong verbal and graphic communication skills to understand and discuss specific species diversity, water management, surface materials, or wayfinding with members of the university community.
- Creativity, adaptability, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills are required.
