MECHANIC II

We are looking for a hands-on, dependable Mechanic II to support maintenance operations for bikeshare bicycles, kayaks, micro mobility equipment, and related recreational assets throughout Newburyport, MA and neighboring communities.

This role is ideal for an experienced mechanic or service technician who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in safe and reliable equipment, and is comfortable traveling to support multiple locations. The Mechanic II will perform inspections, repairs, preventative maintenance, documentation, and field support to help keep fleets safe, functional, and available for customers.

The right candidate should be self-motivated, safety-focused, mechanically skilled, and comfortable working independently during stand-alone service visits, including overnight travel when needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair routine maintenance issues on bikeshare bicycles, kayaks, micro mobility equipment, and related assets.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and quality checks to ensure equipment meets company standards and applicable local requirements.
  • Complete bicycle repairs including brake adjustments, drivetrain work, tire and tube replacement, wheel checks, cable replacement, component adjustments, and general tune-ups.
  • Inspect kayaks and related recreational equipment for wear, damage, safety concerns, and operational readiness.
  • Maintain accurate logs of maintenance schedules, completed repairs, parts used, and outstanding service needs.
  • Clearly document work performed and communicate repair updates, safety issues, and equipment concerns in a timely manner.
  • Support high fleet availability by prioritizing assigned critical repairs and proactively identifying recurring maintenance issues.
  • Track, organize, and care for assigned tools, equipment, and parts inventory across service locations.
  • Provide professional and helpful customer service when interacting with partners, program staff, renters, and community members.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and immediately escalate safety concerns or equipment issues requiring corrective action.
  • Travel overnight as needed, including stand-alone service visits of up to 3 days and travel up to 50% during peak usage season.
  • Work outdoors in changing weather conditions while maintaining a safe, organized, and productive work approach.
  • Follow company policies related to receipts, daily accountability, vehicle use, documentation, and assigned work responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Proven hands-on experience as a mechanic or service technician, preferably in bike repair, bikeshare, micro mobility, recreational equipment, or related maintenance work.
  • Minimum of 1 year of bike mechanic experience preferred.
  • Strong dedication to safety through quality maintenance and careful inspections.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, bicycle-specific tools, and basic diagnostic processes.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues and complete repairs independently.
  • Excellent communication, follow-through, and documentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple work orders, locations, and service priorities.
  • Comfortable working independently while staying productive and accountable.
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Must be able to use a personal vehicle for local maintenance needs.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to work weekends as needed.
  • Comfortable with physical demands, including standing, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, loading, unloading, and moving equipment.
  • Passion for biking, kayaking, micro mobility, safe recreation, and working outdoors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience repairing and maintaining bicycles in a shop, fleet, mobile service, bikeshare, or outdoor recreation setting.
  • Experience with kayaks, paddling equipment, trailers, racks, docks, or other recreational rental equipment.
  • Familiarity with e-bikes, scooters, or other micro mobility equipment.
  • Experience completing field service work or traveling to multiple service locations.
  • Comfort working in public-facing outdoor environments.

Work Location

This position is based in Newburyport, MA , with travel across neighboring communities and states as needed. Overnight travel may be required, including stand-alone service visits and peak-season support.

Compensation

This is an hourly position . Pay will be based on experience, mechanical skill level, and qualifications.
