We are seeking an Executive Director to serve as the synagogue’s Chief Operating Officer and a key partner in sustaining and strengthening our community.
The Role
Reporting to the Senior Rabbi, the Executive Director is thea senior leader responsible for the financial, operational, administrative, facilities, and human resource functions of the synagogue. This is a highly visible role that blends strategic leadership with hands-on management, partnership with clergy and lay leadership, and relationship-building across the congregation and regional Jewish community.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Strategy: Partner with the clergy teamSenior Rabbi, clergy, and Board to advance the synagogue’s strategic vision; attend and support Board and committee meetings
- Congregational Relations: Serve as a welcoming presence to members and prospective members; address concerns thoughtfully; strengthen relationships across congregational groups; support the lay-volunteers who execute most of the programming
- Operations & Administration: Oversee daily operations, communications, technology, and office systems (including ShulCloud)
- Financial Management: Oversee budgeting, accounting, payroll, financial reporting, and commitments (dues) policies in partnership with lay leadership
- Development & Fundraising: Support annual campaigns and events, High Holy Day appeals, endowment and planned giving; manage donor relations and data
- Facilities Management: Ensure safe, well-maintained facilities; oversee maintenance staff, contractors, rentals, and contracts
- Early Childhood Education: Provide executive oversight of Hertz Nursery School, supporting financial sustainability, operational excellence, and integration into synagogue life
- Human Resources: Supervise administrative and maintenance staff; lead hiring for non-clergy roles; support search committees as needed
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a warm, collaborative, and organized leader with strong operational and financial skills and a deep appreciation for synagogue life.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
- 5+ years of senior management or administrative experience (nonprofit or corporate)
- Demonstrated expertise in operations, budgeting, financial reporting, and project management
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Comfort partnering with clergy, staff, volunteers, and lay leadership
- Strong technology skills (Microsoft Office, databases, web-based communications; ShulCloud a plus; experience using AI as a tools a plus)
- Familiarity with Conservative Jewish values and synagogue culture a plus
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $100,000-$120,000, commensurate with experience
