Chief Engineer - Life Science
The Chief Engineer – Life Science is responsible for ensuring the highest level of professionalism while meeting client needs, and for achieving the goal of 100% uptime across the engineering team. This role leads the operational management and daily administration of the engineering team to safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively operate machinery and systems. The Chief Engineer implements and manages the reliability-based maintenance function, protects and improves the value of client assets, and ensures building engineering systems perform their intended function.
Responsibilities- Monitor operation and maintain HVAC, refrigeration and related equipment; review logs; report problems as needed; perform preventive maintenance; oversee repair and PM of HVAC systems; determine repair/PM frequency.
- Ensure adequate inventory of tools and supplies; manage purchase orders; develop sources for stock materials; perform periodic checks of inventory levels and equipment conditions.
- Oversee activities of contractors working within the building, including representatives of the building or tenants.
- Identify safety hazards; remediate hazards to ensure staff and occupants work in a safe environment; implement and manage safety training programs.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory laws and guidelines related to building infrastructure; alert management of discrepancies.
- Maintain all infrastructure and compliance documentation (up-to-date building drawings and single-line diagrams) and documentation required for regulatory compliance with federal, state, or local law.
- Supervise and manage building engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training and development.
- Ensure Facility Work Flow (FWF) is well understood among staff, engineers, tenants and contractors who perform work on the building's critical infrastructure.
- Develop QA/QC processes.
- Facilitate MEP and infrastructure assessments.
- Provide greater emphasis on preventative maintenance over corrective maintenance.
- Support and continue implementation of recent staff schedule changes.
- Assist with design standards and be a resource for operational issues.
- Provide training and support to expand capabilities of the operations staff: demonstrate proper use and care of tools and instruments, provide hands-on instruction in basic maintenance, safety and troubleshooting procedures, and instill professionalism in manner and appearance.
- Stays abreast of changes in safety and code through seminars and other educational means.
- Provide information for input to client work order tracking system to initiate work orders for unscheduled jobs, develop materials lists for ordering, and provide technical support for projects as required.
- Respond to emergency situations, troubleshoot and repair problems; may wear a pager or carry a radio for rapid response; conduct general housekeeping in mechanical/electrical rooms.
- Complete work in accordance with company SOPs and Work Instructions.

- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent level of professional education.
- One-year certificate from college or technical school or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Universal CFC
- Technical degree in HVAC or five or more years of related experience
- Active Refrigeration Technician's license highly preferred.
- The role requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, work in tight spaces, and perform physical labor related to maintenance and repair.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
- Possible frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock; occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places and outside weather conditions.

- Availability to respond to after-hours emergencies as necessary.
