REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to practice as a registered nurse. Selected on the basis of past nursing experience, interest, and aptitude for the work. Minimum of one year experience, either medical-surgical or recovery room. Must be CPR and ACLS certified.
JOB SUMMARY:
Provides quality nursing care of the pre-op/post-op patient. Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgements and actions. Is responsible for quality documentation in records and reports.
- Pre-operative: Admits and prepares patients for surgery.
- Performs nursing admission assessment of patients and notifies anesthesiologist/surgeon of any abnormalities.
- Ascertains that all necessary paperwork is present in the chart prior to the administration of medications and/or sending the patient to the OR.
- Performs patient teaching to prepare the patient for the anesthetic/surgical procedure.
- Informs patients’ family of progress.
- Reports all pertinent data to the OR nurse prior to transfer to the OR.
- Assists surgeon and/or anesthesia personnel in the administration of pre-op medications and local/topical anesthesia.
- Performs pre-operative phone calls.
- IV Certification
- Post-Operative: Responsible for the recovery room care of all patients.
- Admits patient to Recovery Room and performs post-operative assessment.
- Explains post-operative progress, follow-up, and discharge instructions to patient and significant other.
- Coordinates patient’s discharge with anesthesia department and surgeon.
- Insures patient’s safety during discharge.
- Performs post-operative calls.
- Other Duties:
- Maintains and restocks supplies for the work area.
- Assists with laser patients.
- Records narcotic use as required by State and Federal laws and facility policy
- Maintains equipment in the pre-operative/recovery room area and reports any malfunctions to the Pre-op/PACU/OR Supervisor.
- Assists with inventory as directed by the Pre-op/PACU/OR Supervisor and the Business Manager.
- Maintains a cooperative relationship with co-workers and other BESLC personnel for the continuous improvement of patient care.
- Participates in programs for TQM.
- Participates in programs for CE and professional development.
- Supports and promotes all policies of BESLC.
- Establishes a collaborative working relationship with the OCB scheduling coordinators in order to provide complete patient care.
- All other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations, Business Manager, Supervisor, and Clinical Director.
- Able to use computers will be using EPIC.
Environmental and Working Conditions:
- Works in a clean, well-lighted, ventilated work area.
- Frequent exposure to biological, chemical, and environmental elements including infectious wastes, vapors, fumes, gases, solvents, solutions, and odors, (Boston Eye adheres to all OSHA regulations regarding the protection of employees from hazardous chemicals in the workplace).
- May be required to manage the care of patients during altered states of consciousness and to perform physically demanding patient care.
- Work environment may be busy, noisy, and have many interruptions, requiring frequent reevaluation of priorities.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent tasks: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, handling, reaching, and twisting of weights ranging from light to heavy at heights ranging from the foot to above the head.
- Mobility: walking up to 8-10 hours, standing 3-8 hours, stooping, bending, balancing, climbing, crouching and sitting.
