Town Manager
The Town of Ipswich (population 13,903) is seeking an experienced and strategic leader to serve as its next Town Manager . The ideal candidate is a dynamic, visionary professional with proven expertise in operations and financial management, exceptional communication abilities, and strong collaboration and team-building skills, capable of supporting thoughtful growth while preserving the community’s character.
Reporting to a five-member Select Board, the Town Manager exercises significant independent judgment and carries broad responsibility for day-to-day operations. As the Town’s Chief Administrative Officer, the Town Manager develops the annual operating and capital budgets, prepares Town Meeting warrants, supports the Select Board with public meeting preparation and long-term strategic initiatives, and oversees municipal departments pursuant to the Town Charter.
Ipswich has an FY operating budget of $66 million and a strong record of conservative financial management, as reflected in its AAA bond rating from S&P Global Ratings . The Town benefits from a stable tax base, robust reserves, and its highly desirable North Shore location.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong knowledge and skills in finance, labor relations, personnel administration, economic development, community planning, procurement, law, and intergovernmental relations. A Master’s degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Business, or a related field is preferred. Massachusetts Certified Public Purchasing Official (MCPPO) certification is required during the term of the appointment.
Ipswich offers a competitive compensation package, including health and retirement benefits. The starting salary range is $185,000 to $210,000 , commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Town of Ipswich is an EOE/AA employer.
