Data & Project Analyst
Job Description
Job Description
Data and Project Analyst Cooperative Research Branch (CRB) Support Services Falmouth, MA (WHOI); Pocasset, MA; and Narragansett, RI
This role supports the Bottom Longline Survey (BLLS) and other CRB research by managing and analyzing data, assisting with at-sea operations, and producing analytical outputs for the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC)
Join @Orchard in advancing NOAA’s collaborative fisheries research efforts through work with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center’s (NEFSC) Cooperative Research Branch (CRB). This opportunity supports NOAA’s innovative Bottom Longline Survey (BLLS), a vital project aimed at improving our understanding of marine ecosystems in the complex rocky habitats of the Gulf of Maine.
This unique survey effort supplements traditional bottom trawl data and fills critical gaps in stock assessments for data-poor species such as Atlantic wolffish and cusk. The CRB also partners with research institutions to integrate emerging methods into its field of study, ranging from shark tagging to habitat mapping.
@Orchard is actively seeking a Data and Project Analyst with a strong background in fisheries data, statistical modeling, and collaborative research. In this role, you’ll support NOAA scientists by managing Oracle databases, conducting in-depth analyses, coordinating research outputs, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications. You’ll also have opportunities to assist with at-sea operations aboard commercial fishing vessels and engage with external partners.
If you’re passionate about marine science, data-driven research, and hands-on fieldwork, this position offers a chance to shape the future of cooperative fisheries management and ecosystem-based assessments.
Key Responsibilities
As a Data and Project Analyst, your primary duties will include:
- Assisting in the management of research data in Oracle databases, including but not limited to data auditing and data processing.
- Interacting with Oracle databases to fulfill data requests for agency staff, collaborators, and the public on time.
- Conducting statistical analyses of survey and research data, supporting analyses by other project staff, and reviewing collaborators’ analyses. Analyses may include, but are not limited to:
- Developing modeling approaches with appropriate uncertainty for relative indices of abundance for use in stock assessment models.
- Exploring model types and covariates that could improve models.
- Testing the resulting model indices against other abundance measures (e.g., the NEFSC Bottom Trawl Survey or other data sets) to validate that the survey index is tracking changes in abundance for different species.
- Producing tables and figures and supporting documentation of analytical work conducted with survey and research data.
- Producing documentation of protocols for data collection, data auditing, and data analysis.
- Producing documentation and conducting data review and analysis from optical and oceanographic sampling methods that supplement catch and biological sampling. This includes onshore data processing and extraction.
- Producing publications of scientific methods and findings in peer-reviewed manuscripts and technical documents to support stock assessments and fisheries management.
- Coordinating and collaborating with researchers and data users in multiple groups at the NEFSC and regional office, including data sharing, analysis, and documentation.
- Developing materials and presenting research at scientific conferences and stock assessment, and other technical meetings, to fisheries managers, and at outreach events.
- Assisting with the development of project reports for NAFO, NCRWG, NOAA HQ, and others.
- Assisting in developing technical reports and proposals for competitive funding.
- Assisting CRB leadership with developing timely responses to incoming Action Items (i.e., Taskers)
- Assisting with dockside work, including staging of fishing vessels as research platforms, to support survey operations.
- Participating in research trips, as needed, aboard commercial fishing vessels, including implementation of scientific sampling protocols, deployment and retrieval of fishing gear, collection, sorting, and processing of fish catch, and other sampling in support of fisheries research.
- Providing logistical and at-sea support for industry participants in cooperative research programs, including recruitment with community leaders, program introductions, port visits to identify set-up requirements and constraints, equipment deployment and training, troubleshooting support, and data collection, and participating in research cruises as necessary.
- Providing logistical and operational support at sea or dockside to support other cooperative research projects.
Required Qualifications & Experience
To be successful in the role, candidates must possess the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree with six (6) years’ experience, or Master's degree with four (4) years’ experience, or a PhD with two (2) years’ experience; degree and experience must be directly related to the individual requirement.
- Extensive experience analyzing complex (i.e., fisheries) data sets.
- Extensive experience with identifying, interpreting, analyzing, and applying a range of established approaches and solutions to tests, problems, or issues.
- Experience with survey and other fisheries data.
- Significant experience writing scientific papers for publication.
- Current MS Office skills
- PHP, PL/SQL, R, ArcGIS, Python, SAS, and/or other programming languages or software
- Oracle database systems.
Essential Conditions of Employment
- Driver's License: Must hold a valid state driver’s license with the ability to operate a federal motor vehicle.
This position includes authorized overtime, travel, and training as required by the project scope. If you are ready to contribute to a vital environmental mission, we encourage you to apply.
