Test Engineer
Company and Team - The ocean covers 71% of our planet, yet we know less about it than the surface of Mars. Apeiron Labs is on a mission to change that. We're not just building underwater vehicles—we're building systems that will reshape weather prediction, revolutionize aquaculture, transform shipping, and strengthen national security. We're developing breakthrough technologies that slash ocean sensing costs by orders of magnitude
Join a crew of battle-tested subsea specialists, robotics experts, firmware architects, and full- stack cloud engineers. This is a unique opportunity to engineer the future of ocean intelligence and contribute to humanity's understanding.
Apeiron means unbounded in Greek. The challenge is unbounded. The opportunity is unbounded. Your creativity can be unbounded too.
About the Role
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Test Engineer to lead and execute rigorous validation of autonomous marine systems in both controlled lab environments and dynamic ocean conditions. You will play a critical role in qualifying systems for mission-readiness by designing, executing, and documenting comprehensive test campaigns. This role spans shore- based integration work to offshore test ranges and requires close collaboration with mechanical, electrical, and software teams.
A drive for high yield, low-cost design innovation is needed to reduce the complexity and bring about a step change in the subsea manufacturing space.
For us, remote work might mean deploying systems in the ocean , watching your creations dive, and surfacing with data that changes everything. If you've got an adventurer's soul, you're our kind of engineer.
How you will make an impact on ocean intelligence
- Develop, execute, and document test plans for autonomous underwater and surface vehicles, including subsystem, system-level, and mission-level tests.
- Lead and participate in sea trials, including test range operations, launch & recovery, data collection, and real-time troubleshooting.
- Operate test equipment, instrumentation, and support infrastructure (e.g., battery chargers, simulators, navigation aids) during onshore and offshore testing.
- Analyze post-test data to validate system performance against requirements and drive resolution of issues across engineering teams.
- Develop automated and repeatable test procedures to streamline regression testing and factory acceptance.
- Coordinate logistics for field tests, including equipment preparation, transportation, and adherence to safety protocols.
- Maintain detailed documentation, including test reports, discrepancy logs, and performance metrics.
- Interface with internal and external stakeholders, including QA, systems engineering, and program management.
What you must have
- B.S. in Mechanical, Electrical, Robotics, or Ocean Engineering, or related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- 2+ years relevant experience
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively amongst a diverse group of engineering disciplines.
- US Citizen, or Permanent Resident
- 2+ years of experience testing complex electromechanical or robotic systems, preferably in marine environments.
- Strong understanding of sensors, embedded systems, and data acquisition tools.
- Proven field experience in harsh environments, with the ability to work from small boats, shoreside facilities, or research vessels.
- Familiarity with test tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and serial interfaces (RS-232/485, CAN, Ethernet).
- Competent in scripting tools (e.g., Python, Bash) to support test automation and data parsing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to travel frequently and support extended field tests at sea, including occasional weekends.
- Ability to lift or carry 30 pounds repeatedly, stand for long periods of time, traverse ladders, small hatches and remain stable on uneven surfaces, and work outdoors over a wide range of weather conditions.
- US Citizenship required.
- The mindset to rapidly iterate in startup time is required
It 'd be great if you also had these
- Experience with autonomous vehicle systems (AUVs, USVs, or UUVs).
- Familiarity with NMEA, ROS, MOOS-IvP, or similar marine/autonomy middleware.
- Current or previous TWIC card
- Small boat operator experience, including USCG Captains licensure.
- Experience in root cause analysis and issue triage for multi-domain systems (hardware, software, comms).
