This role provides professional technical editing and publication support for NOAA scientific reports, manuscripts, and serials for the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC)

This opportunity is part of the Operations, Management, and Information (OMI) Division within the Science Research Directorate (SRD), which provides critical research communications, editorial services, and public affairs support across the Center.
As the Technical Editor of Marine Sciences, you will help NEFSC researchers publish and share their findings by managing the editing and documentation of formal and informal scientific publications. From manuscript development to compliance with NOAA style and accessibility standards, your expertise will ensure the integrity and reach of NEFSC's scientific contributions. You’ll also serve as the Center’s point of contact for NOAA’s Research Publication Tracking System (RPTS), supporting users, reporting on publication outcomes, and contributing to broader NOAA communications goals.
This role is ideal for a skilled editor with deep experience in the natural sciences, familiarity with government publishing policies, and a passion for making complex research accessible. Remote or hybrid work may be available, depending on secure system access and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Working with authors to develop manuscripts and deal with publishing issues.
Making periodic required reports to NOAA Fisheries.
Assisting authors with interpreting journal submission and copyright policies.
Copyediting scientific manuscripts.
Maintaining and circulating a current style sheet and author guidelines for agency-published serials and papers.
Ensuring that final agency-published serials and papers conform to Council for Science Editors style and other agency standards, and meet Section 508 standards before electronic distribution.
Completing the required publication distribution.
Maintaining the in-house publication database.
Administering RPTS for NEFSC users
Serving on the NOAA and NOAA Fisheries RPTS User Groups
Required Experience and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent, full-performance level knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of technical editing and writing.
At least 5 years of experience executing these skills working with manuscripts in a natural science field.
Technical editing knowledge and skills to execute full editorial control of a publication series, to instruct others in technical writing, and to manage in-house standards for publication production, including style, usage, distribution, documentation, and 508 compliance.
