About the Role:

The Vet Assistant at Saugus Animal Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting veterinarians and ensuring the well-being of animal patients. This position involves assisting with medical procedures, preparing treatment areas, and providing compassionate care to animals during their visits. The Vet Assistant will be responsible for maintaining a clean and organized environment, managing supplies, and facilitating communication between pet owners and veterinary staff. This role requires a strong commitment to animal welfare, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical setting. Ultimately, the Vet Assistant contributes significantly to the smooth operation of the hospital and the delivery of high-quality veterinary care.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience or formal training as a veterinary assistant or in animal care.
  • Basic knowledge of animal handling and medical terminology.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and handle animals safely.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Veterinary Assistant (e.g., Approved Veterinary Assistant program).
  • Experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with veterinary software and record-keeping systems.
  • Knowledge of animal behavior and emergency care procedures.
  • CPR and first aid certification for animals.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and surgeries by handling animals and preparing necessary equipment.
  • Monitor and record vital signs and behavior of animals before, during, and after procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of treatment rooms, kennels, and surgical areas to ensure a safe environment.
  • Manage inventory of medical supplies and restock as needed to support daily operations.
  • Communicate effectively with pet owners to provide updates, instructions, and support regarding their pets’ care.

The Vet Assistant utilizes strong animal handling skills daily to ensure the safety and comfort of patients during examinations and treatments. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with pet owners and veterinary staff, providing clear instructions and compassionate support.
