The pace of change in society and our industry is accelerating and our expertise and track record puts us in an unparalleled position to shape the sustainable future of our industry.

To be successful we must anticipate the needs of our customers, reducing the cost of energy delivery today and pioneering the flexible energy systems of tomorrow. This requires us to deliver on our promises and always look for new opportunities to grow, both ourselves and our business.

Reporting to the Director of Risk and Compliance, we’re looking for a Risk Manager who can influence at the highest levels, bring clarity to complexity, and help power critical decisions across our most important priorities. This role can be located in Waltham, Massachusetts, Brooklyn, New York and/or Melville, New York with hybrid working.

Job Purpose

This is a high-impact, high-visibility role that partners closely with senior leadership to shape and influence critical business decisions, including multi‑billion dollar infrastructure investments. The position plays a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of the clean energy transition, while also providing the opportunity to lead, develop, and grow a key capability within a critical risk function.

You’ll go beyond managing risk—you’ll enable progress across National Grid’s biggest priorities:

  • Advance cleaner energy
Manage risks tied to decarbonization, grid transformation, and regulatory change
  • Strengthen infrastructure investment
Provide insight and challenge on large-scale capital programs and system resilience
  • Deliver for customers
Ensure risks impacting reliability, affordability, and service are proactively managed
  • Drive better decisions
Translate complex risk into clear, actionable insights for executive leaders

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead delivery of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework
  • Act as a trusted advisor to a Business Unit —providing challenge, insight, and solutions
  • Coordinate and advise risk owners on risk identification, assessment, and analysis—delivering practical guidance aligned to policy and informed by industry best practice.
  • Deliver executive-ready reporting to leadership and governance forums
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of direct and/or virtual risk professionals
  • Strengthen risk culture and continuously improve how we operate

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in risk management (or related field), including experience of operating across various areas of a 3 Lines Model, and leading ERM initiatives and leadership reporting.
  • Experience gained in a large, complex organization (matrixed, multi business, regulated, or capital intensive).
  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in risk, business, finance, accounting, or a related discipline
  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., ERMCP, CRM, CRMP, ACA/ACCA/ICAS, CPA, CIA/CMIIA)
  • Ability to provide expert risk advice and practical recommendations to stakeholders and leadership
  • Strong communication skills—able to distil complex risk into clear, actionable insight
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) and GRC systems
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop team members
  • Excellent planning and project management capability
  • A continuous improvement mindset, with a track record of driving value-add outcomes
  • Commercial mindset with the ability to connect risk to strategy
