A day in the life
You start your shift by walking the floor, checking the preventive maintenance (PM) schedule, and reviewing the Idle Assets Database. You align the mechanics' work schedule, lead a quick safety and sanitation huddle, and then dive into the highest-impact tasks that keep production on time and equipment in peak condition.
How you keep the plant running- Meet all expectations of a Mechanic independently, while supervising the team’s output and priorities.
- Own preventive maintenance execution and improvement, ensuring compliance to the PM program and timely updates to the Idle Assets Database.
- Plan, fabricate, and install non-mechanical fixtures and infrastructure (for example, stands and tables) to support operations.
- Maintain meticulous records for work orders, downtime events, maintenance projects, and materials purchases.
- Safely service electrical systems up to 600 volts.
- Perform precision welding using heli-arc, TIG, and plasma cutting equipment.
- Operate stand-up and sit-down forklifts (current license/certification required).
- Recommend actions in hiring, firing, discipline, promotion, transfers, and compensation decisions.
- Deliver employee training and champion continuous improvement within the department.
- Enforce standards for quality, safety, and sanitation at all times.
- Control labor costs through efficient scheduling, right-sizing manning, and completing tasks on straight time whenever possible.
- Model and uphold company policies and procedures, including local practices, to ensure fair and consistent application.
- Administer performance appraisals and salary reviews; provide frequent, actionable feedback.
- Coach team members through work-related challenges, offering guidance, direction, and motivation.
- Oversee purchasing of tools, materials, and parts via the NWF Req Database.
- Serve as the primary contact for the Maintenance Mechanics work schedule and be on-call for urgent needs during the week.
- Tackle special projects and other duties as needs evolve.
- Technical trade or college degree, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years in manufacturing maintenance, including at least 3 years in a food manufacturing environment.
- 2 to 3+ years leading or supervising a maintenance team; decisive leadership with strong task allocation skills.
- Knowledge of PLCs and VFDs; Allen-Bradley exposure is a plus. Troubleshooting required; programming not required.
- Licensed to operate both stand-up and sit-down forklifts.
- Troubleshooting skills across mechanical and electrical systems.
- Pneumatics expertise.

- Diagnostics for industrial automation equipment.
