Nurse Practitioner or Physician assistant Primary care

General Definition and Scope of Job

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) provides primary healthcare services, including preventive and routine care, at the medical center. The role also involves developing and presenting educational programs tailored to underserved and uninsured populations in our service areas. This position collaborates with other healthcare providers to refer patients to necessary services and ensures comprehensive care is delivered.

Minimum Skills, Experience, and Educational Requirements

  • Registered Nurse with a current license from the Board of Registration in Nursing with NP certification and a graduate degree (MSN or certificate of Advanced Graduate Study) from an accredited institution, or
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program with a BA, BS, or MS degree.

Required Certifications and Licenses

  • As outlined above (RN with NP certification or completion of a PA program).

Preferred Skills, Experience, and Educational Requirements

  • Ability to assess, plan, coordinate, and deliver patient care alongside a physician.
  • Perform patient assessments and physical exams, including necessary lab work and screenings for physical symptoms.
  • Record patient health, family, and psychosocial history.
  • Collaborate with physicians to develop, document, and implement care plans.
  • Plan diagnostic workups and adjust treatments and medications based on documented patient needs.
  • Proficient in:
    • Understanding growth and development;
    • Assessing age-specific data and nutritional needs;
    • Providing dietary counseling as necessary;
    • Administering treatments, prescribing, and dispensing medication;
    • Immunization administration;
    • Utilizing community resources for patient care;
    • Involving family or significant others in care plans when appropriate.
  • Skilled in identifying health concerns, high-risk family dynamics, and making necessary referrals.
  • Maintain clear, detailed documentation of patient progress.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow up promptly.
  • Physical demands include walking and standing for extended periods, occasional sitting, hand dexterity, and clear hearing and speaking abilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 1/3 of one’s body weight.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • The job can be stressful due to competing demands, including caring for multiple patients and coordinating with staff.
  • Must comply with all applicable healthcare laws and internal compliance regulations.

Required Availability

  • May be required to work on a rotating schedule, including evenings, holidays, and weekends, depending on department needs
