Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Manager—and with technical oversight from a Medical Technologist or Specialist as applicable—this role performs basic clinical laboratory tests used in the detection and diagnosis of disease. All essential functions are carried out with consideration for the age-specific needs of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory procedures in accordance with established standard operating procedures, departmental policies, and practices.
  • Receive patient specimens and verify specimen integrity by correlating identifying information with requisitions and patient history files.
  • Validate sample information and assess acceptability upon receipt.
  • Prepare and perform routine clinical and microscopic tests and tissue slides as directed.
  • In Blood Bank operations:
    • Process all donor units received.
    • Assist in the preparation of blood products, including fresh frozen plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate.
    • Dispense blood products for transfusion as appropriate.
    • Utilize proper sterile technique to prevent contamination.
  • Operate mechanical and/or semi-automated laboratory equipment as required.
  • Participate in quality control (QC) procedures and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Assist with laboratory readiness, including cleaning work areas, preparing instruments, and stocking supplies.
  • Answer telephone inquiries and provide specimen status or test results to nursing units and physicians as permitted or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education / Basic Knowledge

  • Completion of an Associate degree in laboratory science (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, medical technology) or
  • Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA standards.

Credentials (One of the Following Required)

  • National certification by ASCP or equivalent in areas such as:
    • Medical Laboratory Science/Technician
    • Medical Technology
    • Microbiology
    • Chemistry
    • Hematology
    • Other recognized categorical certifications
      OR
  • Eligibility for national certification, including completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization
    OR
  • Previously met or could have met CLIA qualifications for technologist-level testing personnel.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and instruments and perform procedures within assigned laboratory sections.
  • Ability to accurately conduct, analyze, and interpret laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety risks and adherence to safety precautions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to support effective customer and provider relations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to deliver patient care that reflects aging processes, developmental stages, and cultural considerations.

Experience

  • Minimum of 12 months of clinical laboratory experience.
    • A supervised clinical laboratory internship may be substituted for direct experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating laboratory equipment and performing basic laboratory procedures.
  • Physical and visual dexterity required to accurately conduct and interpret laboratory tests.
  • Ability to work standing at laboratory benches and lift laboratory supplies as needed.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in healthcare environments such as acute care hospitals, physician offices, and ancillary healthcare facilities.
  • Laboratory settings may involve exposure to infectious materials, toxins, or other hazardous substances; risks are minimized through strict adherence to safety protocols.
  • Physical requirements include:
    • Prolonged standing and bench work
    • Lifting and carrying supplies
    • Visual strain associated with close specimen examination
  • Rotational on-call assignments may be required.

Pay Range:

$24.29-$40.07
