Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) delivers continuous, 24-hour emergency medical services at its Cambridge and Everett Hospital locations. As one of the most active emergency service providers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, CHA manages approximately 100,000 annual patient visits and has attained national recognition for operational excellence and efficiency. Distinguished features of the program include an advanced patient triage and tracking infrastructure, an optimized admission protocol designed to expedite the transition of acute patients to inpatient beds, and a rapid assessment framework for clinical prioritization. Additionally, the department utilizes a BIDMC tele-stroke program and provides integrated Psychiatric Emergency Services at the Cambridge campus.
The Emergency Department Nurse Manager is responsible for providing comprehensive oversight of clinical operations, strategic service planning, financial performance, and continuous quality improvement initiatives within the department. This leadership role entails the direct supervision of all clinical and auxiliary personnel, including the management of staff competencies, professional evaluations, and annual performance reviews.
Key responsibilities include:
Clinical Operations:
Exercising strategic leadership to guide personnel and facilitate the effective resolution of professional conflicts.
Overseeing the development, implementation, and rigorous monitoring of systems for the acquisition and maintenance of essential equipment and supplies, while ensuring the continuous revision of unit clinical standards, policies, and procedures.
Engaging in high-level collaboration within the service line and across diverse organizational departments to maintain seamless and effective clinical operations.
Partnering with members of the leadership team to strategically recruit and onboard high-caliber professional candidates.
Service Planning:
Formulate and execute strategic programs tailored to the specific requirements of the community, patients, and clinical personnel.
Foster robust interdisciplinary partnerships to advance the delivery of patient-centered care.
Provide comprehensive supervision and professional development for nursing staff and members of the interdisciplinary team.
Business Performance:
Formulates the unit budget in collaboration with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer and oversees the monitoring of cost-per-unit metrics alongside other critical business performance indicators.
Engineers innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiencies while ensuring the sustainment or advancement of care quality.
Performance Improvement:
Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to performance improvement, encompassing clinical outcomes, fiscal efficiency, and patient satisfaction metrics.
Partner with healthcare providers and organizational leadership to conduct performance evaluations and implement strategic enhancements to service line operations.
Leadership:
Direct change management initiatives and cultivate a collaborative and inclusive professional environment.
Promote a culture that prioritizes diversity and the delivery of equitable healthcare services.
Maintain effective communication protocols across multidisciplinary teams and various departments.
Optimize personnel performance through structured coaching, formal evaluations, and the enforcement of professional accountability.
Operate proficiently within a unionized framework, ensuring compliance with relevant labor agreements as applicable.
Engage constructively with staff members to provide developmental feedback and maximize professional growth, providing formal counseling and administering progressive disciplinary measures when warranted.
Execute additional professional responsibilities as assigned or required by leadership.
Comprehensive Job Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Candidates must be a graduate of an NLN Accredited School of Nursing. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is strictly required to ensure a strong foundation in clinical leadership, though a Master’s Degree in Nursing or a related field is highly preferred for this management tier.
Licensure: Applicants must possess a current or conditional Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing.
Certifications:
Mandatory maintenance of Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required, or must be successfully obtained within the first year of employment.
Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) designation is preferred and viewed as a clinical asset.
Professional Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years of clinical nursing experience specifically within an Emergency Department setting.
Proven track record of leadership and management abilities, including direct supervision of clinical and support staff.
Three (3) years of formal management experience is preferred to effectively navigate the operational complexities of a high-volume ED.
