The Town of Yarmouth is searching for a Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician to join our team!

Performs complex technical computer-aided and drafting work; performs skilled technical work in conducting field surveys and collecting Global Positioning System (GPS) data; performs other civil engineering activities in conjunction with municipal engineering projects; all other work as required.

Performs diverse highly technical work requiring the accurate application of accepted standards of performance, and the exercise of independent judgment and initiative in completing assigned tasks.

Provides engineering support to the Department of Public Works to ensure professionally designed structures and systems; provides support to other town departments as directed.

Responsible for the preparation of plans and work drawings and assists in overseeing construction, inspection and quality assurance of engineering elements of town projects.

Conducts linear and topographical field surveys of municipal engineering projects; locates existing survey monuments using a transit; identifies elevations using a level; lays out construction site based upon plans.

Digs holes and clears brush using hand and small power tools in the course of conducting surveys.

Responsible for the preparation of Computer Aided Design (CAD) engineering plans, maps and specifications, and assists in the preparation of maps, databases, and comprehensive plans.

Drafts detailed Geographic Information System (GIS) changes or additions to the graphic database.

Analyzes data, source maps and photographs, computes or automates mapping products, and makes recommendations.

Assists in the design, drafting, and calculation of drainage remediation projects.

Meets with members of the general public to provide information and assistance.

Maintains and upgrades statutory, operational and professional knowledge of land surveying and civil engineering.

Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Education:
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering/Surveying or Computer Science.

Experience :
Three years experience in drafting/surveying position, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator=s license required.

Physical Requirements:
Minimal physical effort required in office setting; light to moderate physical effort required when performing site work. Must be able to access all levels of a construction site and traverse rough or uneven ground. Occasionally required to climb and reach. May be required to walk and stand for extended periods. Vision must be correctable to Anormal@ ranges. Must be able to judge distances and spatial relationships. Ability to operate a keyboard, digitizer, data collector, electronic distance meter (EDM), and GPS unit.
