Scientist - Cancer Care Equity Program

Overview

The Cancer Care Equity Program (CCEP), which develops programs and interventions to advance clinical access and equity at DFCI and in the surrounding community, is seeking a Research Scientist with experience in Implementation Science. The Research Scientist would report to Dr. Lathan, who is Chief Clinical Access and Equity Officer (CCAEO) and Medical Director of the Cancer Care Equity Program (CCEP). The Research Scientist will be responsible for making contributions enhancing productivity of the CCEP through providing facilitative and scientific operational support to the program. Under the direction of Dr. Lathan, the research scientist will assist in the evaluation of collected data, write manuscripts, and collaborate on grant applications focusing on cancer equity focused interventions. They will work closely with the CCEP leadership team, which includes the Administrative Director and Nursing Director of CCEP and will oversee the scientific direction of CCEP’s research team. The Research Scientist is also expected to work in a matrixed fashion with the Chief Clinical Access and Equity Officer’s (CCAEO) leadership team to evaluate the effectiveness of CCEP interventions and disseminate the results beyond the walls of DFCI to influence research and policy.

Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Draft manuscripts and assist and grant writing on projects that help to define, prioritize, evaluate, and develop clinical access and equity projects/initiatives for CCEP.
  • Within the CCEP
    • Work directly with Dr. Lathan to assist the program with manuscript writing, NIH and philanthropic grant applications and policy papers, with a focus on program evaluation and implementation science in clinical settings.
    • Oversee the research aspects of the CCEP research team, currently consisting of Research Project manager and research assistant.
    • In collaboration with the Associate Director for CCEP, and the research team, assist with the continued development of the DFCI SDOH demographic patient dashboard, in working with the Clinical Operations and Business Analytics CCEP team members.
    • Brainstorm ideas, gather requirements, leverage scientific and management skills and act in a collaborative fashion with the leadership team at CCEP, alongside other CCEP faculty as well as other equity focused collaborators from the community, government, clinical and private sectors.
    • In collaboration with Dr. Lathan, assist in the development of new projects and interventions focused on the expansion of clinical access with a focus on historically marginalized patients.
  • Across the DFCI enterprise
    • Under the Direction of Dr. Lathan in his CCAEO role, work synergically with other DFCI departments and leaders, including the VP of Community Health, the leadership team from the Quality and Safety Department, and others as needed for Clinical Access and Equity related grants, manuscripts, and white papers.
    • Under the direction of Dr. Lathan, assist in the development and evaluation of implementation projects developed as part of the Access and equity initiatives as part of the new hospital collaboration.
    • Serve as content expert on program evaluation and implementation science methods for the Clinical Access and Equity Office.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of cancer as a disease process, ideally with a background in Cancer Genetics, Population Sciences, and/or Epidemiology.
  • Training and experience related to implementation science, and program evaluation in clinical settings.
  • Broad understanding of health equity and related interventions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills – must be able to build connections within and between teams, appropriately represent the vision/voice of involved faculty, and build constructive and effective relationships with a broad and diverse group of colleagues.
  • Excellent organizational, time- and project-management skills and an ability to work independently.
  • Strong written, verbal, and creative communication skills, including ability to translate insight into content, develop and write manuscripts create PowerPoint or written presentations, and develop grant applications.
  • Passion for learning and innovation, ability to set new and stretching goals for him/herself and the team with a “can-do” attitude and high attention to detail.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research oversight of existing CCEP Research Project Manager, and Research Assistant

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Implementation Science, Biostatistics or Epidemiology, Public Health or Medical Science required experience in clinical arenas an asset.
  • Previous experience working as a scientist or senior project manager in a clinical, academic research, medical science, or similar setting strongly preferred.
