Mohawk Trail Vocational Program Teacher– 1.0 FTE
Mohawk Trail Regional School is currently seeking a Teacher for our Mohawk Trail Vocational Program.
The Vocational Program Teacher provides small group instruction in ELA, Math, and Science. Additionally, the teacher designs and leads work-ready training programs for public high school students with learning differences. This role also focuses on developing life, social, and technical skills through heavily experiential, outdoor learning environments. The teacher will help prepare students to transition from school to competitive or supported employment in green industries and outdoor community job sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Special Educator team to provide small group instruction in ELA, Math, and Science
- Outdoor Curriculum Leadership: Design hands-on, outdoor vocational units (e.g., agriculture, grounds maintenance, park stewardship) adapted to diverse learning styles.
- IEP & Transition Compliance: Align outdoor vocational training with federal, state, and individual student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Field Job Coaching: Supervise and instruct students directly on-site during outdoor internships, community cleanup projects, and school garden operations.
- Safety & Risk Management: Teach, model, and enforce rigorous safety protocols for using outdoor tools, handling weather conditions, and navigating public spaces.
- Community & Public Partnerships: Build relationships with local parks departments, nurseries, and eco-conscious businesses to secure a diverse range of outdoor training sites.
- Skill Adaptation: Modify outdoor tasks, tools, and environments to ensure physical accessibility and psychological safety for all students.
- Data Tracking & Reporting: Document student progress on vocational benchmarks, social-emotional growth, and stamina during physical, outdoor tasks.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Vocational Education, Career and Technical Education (CTE), or related field.
- Certification: Valid state teaching credential in Special Education or Vocational/Technical Education required for public school instruction.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years working with adolescents with learning disabilities, neurodivergence, or emotional/behavioral challenges.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift/move vocational equipment alongside students.
Preferred Skills
- Green Industry Knowledge: Basic familiarity with landscaping, horticulture, trail maintenance, or outdoor recreation tools.
- Behavioral Management: Strong positive behavior intervention strategies (PBIS) adapted for dynamic, unstructured outdoor settings.
- Advocacy: Passion for connecting students with diverse learning needs to meaningful outdoor careers.
