In addition to our excellent benefits package, HFOT offers a flexible work schedule. Generally, HFOT’s hybrid approach is that after 90 days, employees spend about 50% of their time working in the HFOT office in Taunton, MA and about 50% of their time working from home, if the employee’s role and job responsibilities are suited to such an arrangement.

Note:  Although HFOT offers a flexible work schedule, this position requires work in the Taunton, MA office location two or more days per week.

Position Summary

The Philanthropy Advisor (PA), reporting to the Deputy Director of Development, develops and implements strategies to secure financial support from a portfolio of current major donors ($5,000 and up) or major donor prospects identified with the capacity and inclination to make major gifts in support of the Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) mission. The PA will have a dynamic and diverse portfolio of 200 - 250 individuals capable of contributing major gifts to the overall revenue of Homes For Our Troops.

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage a portfolio of 200-250 donors and prospects. This includes all phases of the gift cycle (identifying and qualifying new prospects, initiating contact with donors, customizing cultivation and solicitation strategies, engaging in direct solicitation, or facilitating solicitation meetings as appropriate, and implementing stewardship initiatives). Prepare personalized solicitation packages that focus on organizational needs, funder interests, and recognition, as appropriate. Prepare written materials such as proposals, solicitations, reports, and appeal letters.
  • Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle for current donors and prospects in their portfolio.
  • Initiate contact with potential major gift-level donors. Develop appropriate cultivation strategies.
  • Encourage potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation activities and closure. This includes drafting and presenting gift proposal strategies, as well as conducting solicitation conversations and meetings.
  • Help plan and execute major donor cultivation, stewardship, and fundraising events.
  • Convey sensitivity to the needs of donors and prospects.
  • Focus on securing support for a set of organization-wide priorities that include unrestricted annual support and funding for Veteran projects.
  • Create and implement fundraising campaigns that encourage individuals to make charitable donations through planned gifts such as bequests, charitable trusts, and other forms of deferred giving.
  • Work collaboratively with and in support of other Philanthropy Advisors, the Development Team, and other HFOT employees as needed to cultivate and solicit donors, family foundations, corporations, C-Suite executives, and other members of the community.
  • Collaborate on creating prospect strategy with staff as required. Be a resource for other Development staff, including identifying potential connections, as appropriate.
  • Continually assess quality of portfolio and make additions/deletions to portfolio as required to ensure time and effort are being used effectively and giving opportunities are being maximized.
  • Report monthly and quarterly metrics as required.
Qualifications
  • Compatibility with the HFOT culture: HFOT is a dedicated, loyal, and cohesive team led by skilled and versatile leaders focused on excellence, ethical conduct, and the quality of our services.
  • Five or more years of experience working directly with major donors or potential donors (individuals or organizations) utilizing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies resulting in sustained revenue generation. A background in personally soliciting annual and planned/legacy gifts is a plus.
  • A demonstrated record of completing assignments, including timely documentation of donor contacts in Raisers Edge.
  • Knowledge of the Military and Veteran nonprofit philanthropic community is a plus.
  • Excellent oral, written, listening, and interpersonal skills, with solid capability to ascertain donors’ intent and motivation for supporting HFOT.
  • Organizational skills, including but not limited to problem-solving, research, and analytical skills.
  • Must be self-motivated, creative, and have great attention to detail.
  • Must be comfortable and proficient with technology, including Microsoft Office Suite, internet-based collaborative applications, social media, and donor software. Experience and knowledge of Raisers Edge and wealth screening tools are highly desirable.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and accuracy concerning all donors and prospect information.
  • Flexibility to travel for in-person donor visits, HFOT build events, fundraisers, and donor receptions throughout the country, which provide opportunities to engage, solicit, and steward donors.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to lift objects weighing at least 25 lbs., sit for long periods of time, and may use repetitive wrist and hand motions involved in sorting and handling documents. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision. Employee will have close visual contact with a computer monitor constantly.
  • Occasional travel required, including weekends and evenings.
