Aquinas Consulting has an immediate need for an NPI, Prototyping and Sourcing Engineer job supporting a growing manufacturer of drones and unmanned aerial vehicles in the Boston area. This long-term contract-to-potential-hire opportunity is with a key company in the process of acquiring U.S. Defense contracts for their products. In this NPI, Prototyping and Sourcing Engineer job, you will be responsible for taking technical designs into physical realization by bridging the gap between custom-designed parts and commercially available components suitable for prototype builds. The primary responsibility is to review engineering drawings and specifications to identify opportunities to utilize off-the-shelf components instead of custom-fabricated parts to accelerate the prototyping phase.

NPI, Prototyping and Sourcing Engineer job responsibilities:

• Review blueprints, CAD models, and technical illustrations to understand tolerances, material requirements, and functional specifications
• Research and identify commercially available components (motors, PC boards, circuit boards, sensors, fasteners, O-rings, capacitors, resistors, hardware, etc.) that meet or exceed performance criteria
• Collaborate with design teams to recommend minor design modifications that enable the use of standard, readily available hardware
• Act as a technical liaison with suppliers to evaluate component capabilities, lead times, and compliance with project requirements
• Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM) for prototype builds
• Identify alternative components to serve as backups when primary parts are unavailable
• Write and maintain clear work instructions and assembly documentation
• Perform additional duties as assigned

NPI, Prototyping and Sourcing Engineer job qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering preferred; Aerospace, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering with PCB exposure considered
• Experience with Altium preferred or similar PCB design tools
• Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and materials science
• High attention to detail to ensure accurate BOM development and component tracking
• Experience writing technical work instructions and assembly procedures
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
