Job Description

We are looking for a Surveyor to conduct architectural field surveys in and around central Indiana. This position will be full-time contract and remote .

What You'll Do

• Conduct architectural field surveys in and around central Indiana, systematically recording and evaluating buildings, bridges, and cemeteries that are at least 40 years old

• Drive and walk assigned survey areas, applying survey methodology to gather digital data (e.g., GPS readings, photos, site plans, building materials/details) using tablets

• Participate in training sessions in the Indianapolis office prior to field work

• Conduct research and write histories for districts, cities, townships, and/or counties

• Edit and attach photos and site plans, complete survey records for approval, or edit returned records

• Develop and maintain working relationships with fellow surveyors, supervisors, and other division staff

What You'll Need

Required:

• Reliable vehicle and valid driver's license

• Ability to navigate rural terrain and paved urban areas in all seasons of Indiana weather

• Experience with Microsoft Office 365 and digital photography

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in history, historic preservation, architectural history, material culture, or a relevant field

• Ability to quickly and accurately assess building features, forms, and materials to determine age, style, and architectural integrity

• Effective communication skills-both verbal and written

• Self-motivated, organized, and able to work independently

• Flexibility and adaptability to work environment and weather

• Experience conducting research and summarizing data into condensed reports

Preferred:

• Master's degree from an accredited college or university in historic preservation or architectural history

Physical Demands

• Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA and other federal, state, and local standards

• Frequent walking, standing, and climbing stairs, as well as traversing uneven ground, dirt roads, paved roads, and city sidewalks in varying light and weather conditions

• Ability to carry equipment (up to 20 lbs) and use tablet computers outdoors in varying light conditions

• Sedentary work when conducting indoor research, writing, or editing, involving repetitive tasks using a mouse, keyboard, and monitor

The pay range for this position is listed above. Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including location, experience, and education.
