Staff - Summer Theater Workshop
The Scandinavian Cultural Center & Library is hiring staff to support our summer theater workshop! This summer we will be putting on a production of Peer Gynt, a play based on Norwegian folk tales, with kids ages 8–12 serving as the actors, set designers, prop department, stagehands, and more. Over the course of three weeks, we will cast the show, rehearse scenes, build sets, learn acting skills, and most importantly—have fun. We’re looking for creative self-starters who have a passion for theater and enjoy working with kids. You will work collaboratively with the other staff to create mini lesson plans, run fun theater activities and games, guide students through the production of sets, and lead rehearsals working up to the final show, which will take place in our Nordic Hall at the end of the workshop session and be performed for parents and friends.
Responsibilities:
- Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students
- Designing fun theater games and lessons
- Conducting effective rehearsals to produce an engaging finished piece
- Cultivating an environment where a diverse group of kids can feel comfortable expressing themselves and being silly and creative
- Keeping students engaged and the day running smoothly between rehearsals, games, meals, and pick-up/drop-off
Qualifications:
- At least 16 years old
- Previous childcare experience
- -just someone who understands how theater productions run!
- Outgoing and comfortable with public speaking
- Must be a self-starter: we’re looking for people who are eager to design activities and can work independently
- Empathy and patience: working with kids requires a lot of both!
- Safety is always the top priority, so counselors must always be alert and pay attention to detail.
Job offers will be conditional on passing a background check. We will have (paid) staff training prior to camp, where we will provide CPR training if you don’t already have it.
Pay: Starting at $15/hour, pay commensurate with experience
Note: though we are a Scandinavian Cultural Center, we do not require or request that anyone involved, as an employee or as a participant, have Scandinavian heritage. The play we are producing is by a Norwegian playwright, as our mission is to bring the Nordic arts to all! We encourage all interested applicants to apply, regardless of background. Employment will be assigned based purely on merit.
