Staff Software Engineer (Backend, Healthcare)
At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers users to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. Our wearable device tracks key physiological metrics such as heart rate variability, resting heart rate, and sleep quality to provide personalized insights into users' fitness, health, and recovery.
As a Staff Software Engineer (Backend) on the Healthcare team, you will design, build, and maintain scalable backend services that power WHOOP’s growing Healthcare ecosystem. You will develop features that connect members and healthcare stakeholders to our advanced data science insights, enabling richer understanding and actionable guidance across physical, mental, emotional, and hormonal health.
In this role, you will expand WHOOP’s healthcare capabilities through third-party integrations, creation of a health-focused hub within WHOOP, and development of personalized insights and action plans informed by member data. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to deliver a robust feature set that supports our broader Healthcare ecosystem and empowers members to improve their overall well-being.
This role is designed for a backend engineer passionate about building scalable systems, eager to tackle high-impact challenges, and committed to delivering user-centric solutions that resonate with our members' needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Drive and define backend engineering efforts within a cross-functional group, collaborating with designers, product managers, other engineers, and our Digital Health team to refine and advance the WHOOP platform.
- Architect, develop, and maintain robust backend services using Java, Kafka, Postgres, and other AWS technologies, ensuring scalability, high availability, and seamless user experiences
- Drive the ideation, technical design, and implementation of new features and platforms, transforming complex requirements into reliable, scalable solutions.
- Ensure self-alignment with business priorities, define where your time is best spent, and be nimble when business priorities shift.
- Design platforms that are both scalable and re-usable, enabling rapid integration and expansion of features to new geographies and user groups
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, and collaborative innovation
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to interface with multiple product domains, particularly in developing backend solutions for dynamic and content-rich home screens akin to leading web or mobile portals, ensuring a seamless, engaging, and responsive user experience.
- Deep expertise in backend development, with a strong foundation in object-oriented programming, API design, and relational databases (RESTful APIs, Postgres)
- Proven experience in managing asynchronous processing systems (Kafka, SQS) and in developing solutions that meet high standards of scalability and reliability
- Skilled in writing comprehensive tests and creating clear, maintainable documentation that supports a range of technical stakeholders
- A strategic problem-solver who approaches significant challenges incrementally, guided by data-driven insights and a commitment to agile, iterative development
- A proactive, collaborative team player, eager to take on new challenges, continuously learn, and adapt in a fast-paced, data-informed environment
