Chief Technical Consultant

About the Role

STR is seeking an experienced Technical Consultant to provide on-call technical expertise and strategic insight on research and development initiatives that advance our nation’s security. As an on-call consultant, you will collaborate with STR’s technical and leadership teams to shape innovative solutions across areas such as artificial intelligence, autonomy, reinforcement learning, and emerging computational technologies.

We are looking for individuals who can contribute specialized knowledge, guide technical strategy, and assist in business development or proposal efforts on an as-needed basis.

What you will do:

• Provide technical consulting and subject-matter expertise on advanced R&D programs.


• Contribute to proposal development, including concept generation, technical writing, and review.


• Advise teams on emerging research directions, system architectures, and algorithmic approaches.


• Support customer engagement by offering technical insights during meetings, reviews, and briefings.


• Collaborate with STR scientists and engineers to identify new opportunities and shape program strategies.

Who you are:

• Ability to obtain a security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is needed by U.S. Government.
  
  
  
  • Active Top Secret (TS) security clearance strongly preferred
  
  


• Demonstrated experience supporting DoD or Intelligence Community R&D efforts (e.g., DARPA, AFRL, ONR, ARL)


• Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences


• Background in AI, autonomy, optimization, machine learning, or related scientific disciplines


• Track record of successful technical proposal contributions and/or leadership on advanced research programs


• Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfortable working independently and in cross-functional teams


• Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.


• Bachelor’s degree + 15 years’ experience, Master’s degree + 13 years, PhD + 10 years, or equivalent experience

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $233,000-$320,000

The salary range listed is based on external market data. Offers are based on factors, such as but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, training, key skills/critical skills, security clearances, and prevailing market and business conditions.
