Medical Laboratory Technologist CLS/MLT
This role is responsible for all phases of testing, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of laboratory results. The Technologist operates under the direction of the Laboratory Manager/Technical Supervisor and Laboratory Director, and may only perform testing for which they have been trained and demonstrated competency.

Key Responsibilities
1. Test Performance (Pre-Analytical and Analytical)
- Perform accurate and appropriate moderate-complexity testing according to established laboratory procedures
- Evaluate specimens for acceptability and:
- Ensure proper labeling and identification
- Investigate and document unacceptable specimens
- Handle and store specimens according to required conditions and protocols
- Organize workload efficiently to ensure timely completion of testing
- Verify that test results correspond to the correct patient and specimen prior to release
- Follow all established procedures prior to performing testing
2. Test Result Reporting (Post-Analytical)
- Report results accurately and within established turnaround times
- Follow protocols for:
- Critical value identification and notification
- Documentation of communication with providers
- Correct erroneous results according to established procedures, including:
- Notification
- Documentation of corrective actions
- Report state-required reportable diseases to the Massachusetts State Laboratory Institute and document appropriately in the LIS
- Ensure all reporting is complete, accurate, and compliant with laboratory policy
3. Quality Control and Compliance
- Participate in periodic review of laboratory procedures and assist in updates as needed to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Perform and document:
- Quality control procedures
- Calibration and instrument checks
- Ensure quality control is acceptable before reporting patient results
- Accurately evaluate quality control results and:
- Document all results
- Follow established protocols for failures
- Escalate unresolved issues
- Hold patient testing and reporting when quality control is outside acceptable limits
- Adhere to all regulatory requirements:
- Massachusetts 105 CMR 180.000
- CLIA
- OSHA and HIPAA
4. Instrument Maintenance and Calibration
- Perform routine and scheduled:
- Maintenance activities, including daily, weekly, and monthly tasks as required
- Calibration and calibration verification
- Document all maintenance and calibration activities
- Ensure instruments are functioning properly prior to use
5. Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
- Troubleshoot issues related to:
- Instruments and equipment
- Reagents and quality control failures
- Patient specimens
- Follow established troubleshooting protocols
- Document all steps taken and corrective actions
- Notify Laboratory Manager or Technical Supervisor when issues cannot be resolved
6. Safety and Infection Control
- Adhere to all Universal Precautions and laboratory safety protocols
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment at all times
- Follow policies for:
- Chemical handling
- Biohazard disposal
- Exposure prevention
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including:
- Disinfection of work surfaces
- Proper waste disposal
- Report safety hazards immediately.
- Maintain familiarity with:
- Safety Data Sheets
- Spill response procedures for biological and chemical exposures
7. Documentation and Record Management
- Accurately document:
- Patient testing
- Quality control results
- Maintenance and calibration
- Corrective actions
- Ensure all records are complete, organized, and audit-ready
- Maintain documentation in accordance with retention requirements
8. Inventory and Work Area Management
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies
- Ensure:
- Proper storage conditions
- Monitoring of expiration dates
- Removal of expired materials
- Perform regular inventory checks and notify appropriate personnel for reordering
- Maintain clean, organized work areas
9. Competency and Scope of Practice
- Perform testing only within scope of training and documented competency
- Participate in:
- Initial training
- Ongoing competency assessments
- Follow direction from the Laboratory Manager or Technical Supervisor
- Do not perform high-complexity testing unless specifically authorized
10. Collaboration and Communication
- Communicate effectively with providers and clinical staff, including nursing and medical assistants, to support safe and effective specimen collection and testing workflows
- Collaborate with laboratory team members to support workflow
- Escalate clinical, operational, or compliance concerns appropriately
- Document relevant issues, observations, and process concerns in appropriate logs or systems to ensure continuity of information across laboratory staff
Hourly Pay Range: $34 - $48; commensurate with experience
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Technologist (Associates Degree)
- Minimum 3 years of full-time clinical laboratory experience in chemistry, hematology, and microbiology preferred
- 1–3 years of clinical laboratory experience in chemistry, hematology, and microbiology preferred.
Certification
- MT or MLS certification through ASCP or equivalent preferred
Technical Experience
- Experience with laboratory diagnostic instruments such as Sysmex, Abbott Architect, and Cepheid
- Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), including Orchard or equivalent systems
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) integrations and laboratory workflows
Regulatory Requirement
- Must meet CLIA personnel requirements for moderate-complexity testing
- Must demonstrate training and competency prior to performing testing independently
Supervision and Reporting
- Reports to Laboratory Manager or Technical Supervisor
- Works under direction of the Laboratory Director
- Performs testing independently only after competency validation
