Building Mechanic II
Perform a wide variety of duties involved with repairing and preventive maintenance of Institute’s buildings and systems including carpentry, painting, mechanical, plumbing, and other general maintenance duties as required. Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
- Perform repairs and preventive maintenance to buildings including such as roof drains, windows, interior and exterior finishes, walls, woodwork, etc. Replace, repair, sheetrock, plaster, patch and paint as required.
- Perform general carpentry tasks as well as building, sanding, staining/painting woodwork, exhibition cases and gallery pedestals.
- Assist in preparing exhibitions; removing and re-hanging art work, loading and unloading trucks, relocating walls, etc.
- Perform preventive maintenance to various building operating systems such as assisting with HVAC and plumbing systems. Drain and change oil, replace belts, filters and bearings, repair leaks, valves, pumps as necessary and assist in changing motors.
- As assigned and reviewed by the Buildings & Projects Manager, monitor computerized “Building Management System”.
- Assists with HVAC and is part of the Institute’s on-call program. May check sensors at the direction of the Buildings & Projects Manager.
- Assist grounds and facilities staffs as needed to ensure Institute’s buildings and grounds are well maintained, fully operational, safe and clean.
- Answer visitor questions providing accurate information in a courteous, friendly manner.
- Follow all safety rules, regulations and practices.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
- Current Massachusetts Plumbing license preferred.
- Minimum three years of related experience required.
- Ability to work after hours, over weekends and on public holidays with short or no notice.
- Physical Demands:

- Lifting under 40 lbs

- Walking on uneven surfaces

- Bending
- Simple hand grasping
- Able to perform the following physical requirements frequently:
- Lifting over 40 lbs
- Using oil or chemicals
- Climbing ladders
- Stooping
- Walking on wet or slippery surfaces
- Reaching
- Able to perform the following physical requirements continuously:
- Work Environment: Work will be performed in an office environment, museum spaces, mechanical spaces, and the outdoors. The noise level ranges from low to high. The environment is frequently dusty, and there is exposure to fumes and hot and cold temperatures. Work sometimes needs to be performed in confined spaces.
