American Repertory Theater seeks child guardians for our upcoming production of Wonder to oversee and support the well-being of nine young performers ages 11 – 16 throughout the production process. The child guardians provide supervision, support, and assistance to children on stage, ensuring they are comfortable and that their needs are met in a professional and nurturing manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision and Care:

  • Provide constant supervision and care for young performers during all theater activities, including rehearsals, performances, time spent in the dressing rooms or backstage, and during tutoring hours. While the guardians provide supervision during tutoring sessions, a tutor will be provided. The guardian is not responsible for educating the young performers.
  • Ensure that young performers are in a safe environment and adhere to all theater safety protocols.
  • Address any needs or concerns of the young performers in a timely and compassionate manner.

Coordination and Communication:

  • Work closely with the Stage Manager, Associate Producer, Director, and other production staff to ensure that the needs of the young performers are communicated and met.
  • Assist with coordinating schedule logistics for young performers as required.
  • Maintain clear communication with parents or guardians regarding the schedule and any relevant updates.

Support During Rehearsals and Performances:

  • Assist young performers with costume changes, makeup, and other preparations before and during performances.
  • Accompany young performers backstage as needed.
  • Assist with any questions or concerns from young performers or their families.

Health and Safety:

  • Monitor and address any health or safety concerns for the young performers under supervision.
  • Ensure that all young performers are familiar with emergency procedures and are prepared for any unexpected situations.

Schedule and Hours:

Shifts will be scheduled Tuesday – Sunday around rehearsal and performance schedules. Typical shift will be 8.5 hours with a one-hour meal break during which parents or guardians will be responsible for their children. Precise hours are TBD, but most shifts will be fall between noon and 10pm. Our intention is to schedule two guardians whenever all young performers are called. We are open to considering part time applicants.

November 29: Company starts in Cambridge

November 30: First Tech

December 9: First Preview

December 17: Opening

February 8: Closing

February 22: Tentative Extension

Qualifications:



  • Previous Experience working with children, preferably in a theater or performance setting.
  • Strong understanding of child safety and welfare practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certification in first aid and CPR preferred.
  • Background check clearance required.
