Electric Line Foreman
The Assistant Working Line Foreman serves as the operational second-in-command to the Line Foreman and acts as a working field leader within the Department. The position is intended to bridge the gap between line crew operations and departmental supervision while maintaining strong field engagement.
The Assistant Working Line Foreman is expected to provide leadership, mentoring, operational consistency, and safety oversight while remaining actively involved in line work and emergency response activities.
Essential Job Responsibilities
• Assist Line Foreman in scheduling and coordinating daily work activities for line crews.
• Serve as a working field leader and provide direct operational oversight on assigned jobs, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with department standards.
• Support the communication, training, and enforcement of operating procedures, safety requirements, and company policies.
• Take an active leadership role in mentoring, training, and developing apprentice and junior line personnel, including transferring institutional knowledge and reinforcing departmental work standards and culture.
• Monitor job site safety and ensure compliance with applicable safety rules, work practices, and regulatory requirements.
• Take a leadership role in promoting workmanship quality throughout the department and help ensure that completed work meets or exceeds applicable construction standards, utility best practices, and departmental expectations. Assist in identifying and correcting quality concerns in the field and promote a culture of pride, accountability, and continuous improvement within Electric Operations.
• Coordinate field activities with the Line Foreman, Engineering Department, Meter Department, Substation personnel, contractors, electricians, and other City departments as required.
• Respond to outages, emergency conditions, storm restoration activities, and other operational emergencies. During unusual situations, may be required to perform hands-on repair, maintenance, and construction work.
• Assist with material planning, job coordination, and operational readiness activities.
• Provide operational continuity and leadership support in the absence of the Line Foreman.
• Assist management in identifying operational improvements, workforce development needs, and training opportunities.
• Assist with onboarding and integration of new line personnel, helping ensure consistency in training, expectations, and operational practices.
• Coordinate and support special operational projects as assigned, including system improvement initiatives, equipment evaluations, pilot programs, and departmental process improvements.
• Represent the Electric Operations Department during public outreach activities, community events, safety demonstrations, mutual aid coordination activities, or industry events as assigned.
• Assist in maintaining departmental operational documentation, field procedures, and training materials where appropriate.
• Promote a professional, team-oriented culture within the department.
Qualifications and Entrance Requirements
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 8–10 years of experience as a First Class Lineman.
• Demonstrated leadership ability and strong working knowledge of electric distribution operations.
• Must possess a CDL Drivers Class 1B and 2A MA Hoisting licenses.
• Must obtain and maintain security clearance to all CEL service areas.
• The ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner is essential and will be a factor in the hiring decision. Residency in Chicopee is preferred.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Supervisory or crew leadership experience preferred.
