Assistant Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer

POSITION SUMMARY
The position reports to the Building Inspector and is responsible for skilled clerical and record-keeping work in
assisting in discharging the duties of the office; and all other related work as required.

Assistant Building Inspector: Supports the Director of Inspection Services in enforcing the Massachusetts
Building Code (780 CMR); assisting the Building Inspector in enforcing the Ordinances of the City of North
Adams, including Zoning Ordinances: responding to police and fire emergencies outside of normal business
hours; and attending meetings and trainings occasionally outside of normal business hours.
Code Enforcement Officer: Conducts inspections, investigations and communication outreach activities
throughout the City to ensure compliance with state Sanitary Codes and other relevant state and local regulations.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Enforces adopted regulatory codes and ordinances about building construction, and condemnation and
- Assists the Building Inspector in preparing and enforcing such rules and regulations as required by
- Assists the Building Inspector in controlling construction, erection, repair, alteration, demolition,
- As directed by the Building Inspector assigns, trains, and evaluates all departmental administrative and
- Assists in coordinating department activities with other departments, boards, and commissions where
- Assists the Building Inspector in reviewing all applications, examining and approving plans and
or change in use or occupancy of buildings and structures; inspects premises that have been issued
permits to enforce compliance.
- Inspects and certifies buildings and structures periodically in accordance with Massachusetts State
- Assists the Building Inspector in directing all department activities, including the issuance of permits,
and court.
- Assist with supervision of maintenance of all city buildings and grounds.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
As required by law, a qualifying individual must:
- Have at least (5) years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design
- A two-year associate degree in a field related to building construction or design;
- Be certified by the state Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) in accordance with
regulations; or
- Be able to complete and pass the required exams to be certified as a Local Building Inspector.
Special Requirements:
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Certification as a Local Building Inspector by the state Board of Building Regulations and Standards
(BBRS) within 12 months after hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Administrative work is in an office setting, involving sitting, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and
standing. When in the field, work requires agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction
sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period. Occasionally, work may require lifting
heavy objects and carrying them (up to 50 lbs.). There may be a need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials.
Frequent periods are spent in non-office environments, including retail and service establishments, private homes,
town property and facilities (internal and external), swimming pools, roads, etc. Extended periods spent outside.
Extensive periods spent standing and walking; occasional requirement to climb or sustain uncomfortable physical
positions. May spend sustained periods at a computer terminal or on the telephone. Light lifting and carrying of
work materials, including files, inspection tools, and equipment. Subject to regular interruptions to handle
emergencies.
