HVAC Technician
Summary/objective
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of HVAC equipment within the Facilities Department. Under the direction of the Director of Facilities and Operations and/or the Manager of MEP, execute on all matters related to HVAC across a 350-acre campus with buildings totaling over 500,000 square feet. The HVAC Technician will install, repair, and maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings and facilities throughout the School’s campus.
Schedule
HVAC techs will work 4 week days and 1 weekend day per week. Typically, this is on a consistent schedule, but may need to adjust to assist with coverage of vacations and other employee absences. Seasonally respond to the need for snow removal, athletic field support, emergency closings, and other special circumstances.

- Participate in the development of standards for the HVAC team; ensures compliance with these standards
- Leads and participates in the execution of routine maintenance schedules for HVAC on campus.
- Maintain and improve the integrity of the School’s buildings and facilities, etc.
- Executes a system of work practices for recurring work that maximizes the use of the resources provided.
- Review and provide input on job estimates and bids for projects to be completed by outside contractors.
- Coordinate, inspect, approve, and manage work by third party vendors related to grounds.
- Conduct daily/weekly/monthly inspections of the School’s buildings and facilities, etc. and provide data to the Assistant Director of Facilities and/or Manager of MEP to aid in the development of departmental plans and budgets.
- Installs new HVAC units in residential, commercial, or industrial buildings.
- Installs ductwork and thermostats to control the HVAC system.
- Performs routine maintenance on HVAC systems to ensure they operate properly.
- Inspects and troubleshoots problems with existing HVAC units.
- Installs replacement parts on existing HVAC units.
- Maintains inventory of replacement parts and orders replacements.
- Complies with company and industry safety standards.
- Collaborate with general contractors, electricians, and other construction professionals.
- Follow building plans and blueprints.
- Respond to, diagnose, and resolve HVAC emergencies.
- Reads blueprints, sketches, and schematics to determine the necessary materials, equipment, tools, and methods.
- Safely and efficiently operates a variety of power and hand tools to complete jobs accurately and to specifications.
- Protects furnishings, equipment, and other property during HVAC repairs by properly covering or removing items.
- Restores worksites to original condition by removing debris, scaffolding, and equipment used during the project and returning property, furnishings, and equipment to proper location.
- Responsible for maintaining work areas, and company vehicles, clean and organized at all times.
- Develops and maintains records regarding time spent and materials used for specific jobs.
- Provides status reports including the status of work projects, materials used, and hours spent performing labor to supervisor or other appropriate project lead.
- Performs spot checks on equipment to ensure proper working condition; services tools and equipment as needed and returns damaged items for repair or replacement.
- Ensures compliance with federal regulations, policies, and laws regarding construction, repairs, and proper environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal, or use of chemical substances.
- Follows standard safety precautions; adheres to operator’s instructions when using power tools; wears recommended protective equipment such as goggles, hearing protectors, and/or work gloves.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work environment
- Typically, in various residential dormitories, classrooms, dining hall, function facilities, athletics facilities, offices, and various other indoor spaces to include crawl spaces, attics, and other small, confined spaces.
- Frequently, out of doors in all weather conditions known to the New England environment.
Physical demands
- Remain standing and walking for 8 hours per day regularly and up to 12 hours per day as needed seasonally.
- Ability to go up and down flights of steps.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy objects.
- Ability to stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
- Ability to safely operate complex machinery.
- Must be able to lift and/or move, without assistance 10 pounds at a time regularly, 50 pounds frequently, and 100+ pounds occasionally.
- Ability to traverse various areas of the facility (including unpaved areas, dirt paths, uneven terrain, etc.) to conduct inspections and execute grounds maintenance.
- Ability to withstand exposure to inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, etc.).
- Communication skills using the spoken and written word.
- Ability to see with normal parameters.
- Ability to hear within normal range.
- Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Required education and experience
- Education sufficient to read, write, and speak as needed for the job.
- 5 years of experience in HVAC.
- Solid knowledge of plumbing a must.
- Possess and maintain valid driver’s license.
- Maintains licensure in HVAC trade.
Additional eligibility requirements
- Able to successfully complete CHRI, CORI, and SORI checks.
