Adult Education Instructor

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Adult Basic Education Instructor is responsible for providing inmates who are sentenced to the Franklin County Jail and House of Correction with a structured educational curriculum which will enable participants to successfully obtain their General Equivalency Diploma and strengthen skills for success in further educational and professional pursuits. The Adult Educational Instructor monitors inmate progress to ensure that inmates meet their education goals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Education Director who provides instruction and guidance, assigns work and reviews performance through oral and written reports for adherence to policy and conformance with rules and regulations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Exercises direct supervision over inmates and literacy volunteers while they are in a classroom setting.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaches classes in Adult Education (Levels 0-5.9, 6-8.9 and 9-12th). Teaches classes in special topics related to English Language Arts and Math skills to prepare inmates for higher education, job training, and careers. Administers and interprets diagnostic tests. Provides on-going assessment. Prepares individual study plans for students based upon their skills and abilities. Assists with curriculum development to ensure compliance with established standards and achievement of program goals. Maintains records as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Franklin County House of Correction. Makes education re-entry referrals. Assists in academic counseling. Assists the Assistant Superintendent and the Education Director with related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience in adult education and master’s degree in education or related field preferred. Minimal requirement of a bachelor’s level degree in education or related field with demonstrated experience. Massachusetts Teaching Licensure preferred. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work collaboratively with wider programs personnel. Ability to work flexible hours. Familiarity with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education guidelines and procedures. Regular and predictable work attendance. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with persons who come from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Ability to adapt to varying work situations. Ability to act calmly, make decision and act quickly in emergency situations. Ability to prepare general reports and communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Ability to understand, explain and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.

Shift: Monday – Friday (37.5 hrs)

Salary Range: $63,070.80 - $78,908.44

Grade: 16

Fringe Benefits: Full fringe benefit entitlements in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and State Personnel Policies.
