New graduate nurses are hired in cohorts. The cohort members attend nursing orientation together, followed by a series of educational days over 6 months. These activities, besides being educational, also bring the group together promoting social support and relevant discussion of common situations encountered in the first year of practice. The new graduate nurse residency includes a variety of experiential learning modalities that provide opportunities for assimilation and application of clinical theory and concepts to bedside practice.
