Job Description

The 3D Arts department at Massachusetts College of Art and Design seeks an accomplished artist and educator working in the field of Fibers. This is a tenure‑track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

We seek someone whose dynamic pedagogical approach fosters an inclusive and vibrant learning community. To oversee and guide the program, this person must also demonstrate strong organizational, communication and leadership skills. The ideal candidate possesses both a breadth of technical fiber art skills and a deep understanding of the history and complexities of the medium as it intersects with contemporary art practice.

We seek someone committed to bringing students into conversation around emergent questions of cultural and environmental sustainability within the broad arena of fibers practice. This position includes service to the community, college and/or department as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Salary

$68,000–$75,000 commensurate with experience.

This position is governed by the MSCA bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities

The role will involve teaching, curriculum development, studio supervision, and community engagement. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Teaching courses in fiber arts and related disciplines.
  • Developing and revising courses and curriculum.
  • Providing studio supervision and mentoring to students.
  • Engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration within the 3D Arts department.
  • Participating in department service and community outreach as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or MFA (or bachelor’s degree with a substantial record of achievement, 5 or more years) and significant competency in the field of fibers.
  • At least 3 years of professional teaching experience beyond graduate studies.
  • A consistent record of creative/professional practice.
  • Demonstrated organizational, communication, and leadership experience.
  • Clear potential or demonstrated ability to work effectively with and benefit a diverse student body across a variety of skill levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a range of traditional and alternative fiber processes including weaving, knitting, crochet, surface design, sculptural approaches, dyeing, embellishment and embroidery, felting, basketry, fabric construction, and papermaking.
  • Well‑versed in fiber history and critical discourse.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years teaching at the college level.
  • Clear potential or demonstrated ability to teach courses across 3D Arts.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing curriculum.
  • Extensive knowledge and demonstrated ability to teach weaving and natural dye processes.
  • Capacity to connect fiber discourse with broader cultural, social, and environmental concerns.
  • Proven capacity to work collaboratively with an aptitude for cross-disciplinary and system‑wide thinking.
